"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
- Benjamin Franklin

The actions of a few individuals doesn't represent the whole and it's fucking scary that some group of people think they have power to tell others where they can and can't travel to. People talk about how certain things is fear mongering yet these actions is what REAL fear mongering is; it's brain washing people into thinking that somebody wanting to keep things private is automatically a suspicious terrorist. It's no different than the thinking that people who oppose the NSA are suspicious. People have a natural right to privacy and it needs to be respected

Don't compare this to disease. That's just stupid. ANYBODY can get sick bit not anybody can be a terrorist

>Quoting a dead guy to seem profound
Check.
>Government power is scary
Check.
>Equating monitoring sceptics of the NSA with monitoring potential terrorists
Check.
>Natural rights
Check.
>Rounding it off with a good old dose of stupid
Check.

5/5 Bretty good.

Lol, how? Just look at Flee's response cause that's what I would say.
Because while it's true that anyone can be a terrorist, that applies to everything. Anyone can be a serial killer. Anyone can be a rapist. That doesn't mean that we have to assume that everyone is. Should more detail and suspicion be put onto people returning from those areas? Of course. Should they be automatically arrested, and presumed to be a terrorist? No, that's idiotic. The fact of the matter is that an extremely slim percentage of Brits going to those areas are actual ISIS supporters. The vast majority aren't terrorists. And that being said, there's far easier ways to combat British terrorist defectors than this method.

It's not so much of an automatic arrest and presumption of guilt as a check on people going out there in the first place. If they are going out there with a good reason, all they have to do is state it and possibly provide evidence of their claim. This is exceptionally poor wording and possibly implementation but the reasoning behind it at least makes sense.

Somebody could have a cold coming in from Nigeria, or it could be Ebola. There's really no argument here, and it's only something go someone as stupid as Kinder would bring up.

And as for your "far easier methods", what do you suggest is done?
Traveling to a country that is known to have a deadly, contagious disease going around is much different than traveling to a country with intense terrorism. There is a much more likely chance that you're going to bring home a disease, than there is that you're going to bring home a bomb. You can't "catch" terrorism.

As for the easier methods, I already partially laid that out in my previous post. It's as simple as putting more suspicion on people returning from Iraq and Syria, investigating them more, asking them why they went, etc. Arresting anyone who goes to a specific country is idiotic, IMO, and that's why I've always been against travel embargoes.

But here's the thing...

Why would anyone go to Iraq or Syria right now? Unless you're retarded, you'd know that both of the countries are warzones. Just, why the hell would you visit either country right now?
It doesn't really matter why, first off. People should be able to go to whatever country they want to, as long as they're not doing anything illegal there. Maybe a Brit has family in one of those two countries. Maybe a Brit wants to start up humanitarian efforts to those involved in the crisis. There are many, many more reasons someone would want to travel there than to aid terrorism.

What? The OP made it seem much more militant than that. I can definitely agree with asking why people are traveling there in the first place, but I don't think it's necessary to arrest everyone who doesn't want to disclose that information. As long as you're not bringing home a bomb (which is incredibly easy to check), or obviously aiding terrorism, this seems like a situation where a few idiots are messing up the system for everyone.

I think it did but it's also important to know that this is a column run by the mayor of london who is known for being a bit... loopy. This isn't actually being implemented and it's simply what he would like to happen.

That being said, arresting everyone who's been to syria/iraq/the middle east is excessive to the point of retardation. Asking them to notify Customs/Borders that they are going out there beforehand will make it easier to keep tabs on them, which whilst it might not be ideal is far better than them simply being allowed to wander in and out of the Caliphate in the making.

They of course wouldn't bring bombs back with them, but the knowledge of how to make/hide/operate them would be easy to bring through customs. If you know how to make explosives from household chemicals without googling it, then that has the potential to cause some serious damage. Even if only twenty of them come back like this, and the rest died. They could still kill hundreds with an attack in london and preventing that is important for the obvious reason and the less obvious reason.

If yet another terrorist attack by muslims happens in the west, it's going to throw more and more support behind skinhead thugs who want to kill them all. I'd prefer it if the UK didn't end up being run by rightwing nutters (har har at the present government though) and people got along somewhat more easily.

._.

How about instead of throwing around moronic assumptions, you actually explain the retarded notion that not everyone could be a terrorist?
I just can't understand such stupidity. You criticize me by saying I make an moronic assumption yet here you are doing the very thing. I pointed out the stupid comparison of disease to terrorism, maybe if you read and comprehended what I said (instead of jumping on the bandwagon against me) then you would understand that anybody can get sick when travelling to an area that has an outbreak. Terrorism however isn't contagious and you're not going to catch it simply by travelling to a Middle-Eastern nation. It's a choice of somebody being one rather than being infected with it

This is hilarious when you factor in the fact that you support the militarisation of police.
Except the two are different. My rights are not being infringed because police decide to have AR-15s and body armor. My rights however are being infringed when the government demands to seize information from me without probable cause. How about using something called your brain for once?

Don't tell me to use my brain when you don't even have a three-year-old's understanding of simply economic ideas, either.

No, I just don't think it's worth my time trying to get through to you.

Statistics show that the police have become increasingly aggressive and segregated from society, as well as more willing to act in a violent manner when they have the equipment to do so. Policing isn't an easy job, so it's borderline retarded to give them something with a lot more punch. Not to mention, the state of the government, as you pointed out, should make any attempts at beefing up domestic enforcement sceptical.

But, oh wait, I forgot. You're not really a libertarian. Whoops.

That's all I have to say to you.

You literally said that not anybody can be a terrorist, which is objectively incorrect. Stop this poor attempt at damage control and just admit you either worded yourself extremely poorly or genuinely are an idiot.
Yeah, you didn't even read what I said

Here it goes again. How about using your context clues from kindergarten to better analyze my words

Quote
Don't compare this to disease. That's just stupid. ANYBODY can get sick bit not anybody can be a terrorist

Let's closely examine. Anybody get sick, doesn't matter if you're white, black, mentally handicap, good moral person, bad moral person, murderer, priest, etc. It remains that disease and sickness can infect ANYBODY and EVERYBODY

Now for the next part. However, terrorism isn't a disease, thus not able to infect people. It's a idea that people simply choose to understand. Therefor not everybody can be a terrorist because of a person's choice

If you seriously can't get that through your mentally challenged skull, then that's not my fault, It's yours

Terrorism isn't a disease? Whoda thunk.

You don't seem to understand. A lot of Brits are going to fight in Syria and Iraq. They need to do something. I find it funny that you say "put more suspicion" when that would mean following, bugging, and monitoring that person as a suspected terrorist when they probably went over to visit family

If you seriously think increasing the monitoring of people is better than signing some paperwork and stating your reason to travel to the country, then it would seem you've done a 180 and are now in love with the NSA.
That's actually not what "put more suspicion" means at all. Also, I thought that this was a situation where anyone going to Iraq or Syria was "arrested and presumed guilty" like the OP said when I made the post you're quoting. Mr. P has already cleared that up.

Wikipedia has a lot of credibility so long as you know how to use it.

It wouldn't surprise me if you didn't, though.

You obviously don't do enough fact gathering, judging by some of the outstandingly retarded opinions you have.
