Back in 2012 the Guardian reported a story in which the Canadian government was supposedly aware of the plans of American businessmen to dump 120 tonnes of iron sulphate in the Pacific just off the coast, and allowed it to go ahead.

The dumping of iron sulphate into the ocean caused an algae boom of about 10,000 sqaure miles. Consequently, it also caused the largest pink salmon run in 50 years, and 2013 was the second most valuable year of salmon harvests on record, exceeded only in 1988.

This is amazing at a time when the fish population is threatened by both economics and acidification of the oceans, not to mention the cost of dumping iron sulphate in comparison to the profit reaped by the subsequent algae and fish booms.

Not to mention, the process of iron fertilisation can help us to slow down the process of climate change, by virtue of algae-driven photosynthesis.

Well not that is solves everything, but rather best solves everything.
I'd still disagree. Markets don't factor in externalities.

Although I suppose you could argue consumers would do that in an ideal market. Which is why I really don't care for the "theory" of economics in the first place.

I was sceptical as hell because usually massive algae blooms result in killing off a lot of the other fauna/flora but perhaps that only applies to closed water regions (lakes/ponds) <.<

Well any alteration you make always has other unintended following consequences, which is why scientists don't like it when these decisions are made without consulting them first.
