US bans trans fats

No, not obese Bruce Jenners.

In 3 years, companies are expected to have reformulated their food products to exclude trans fats. Trans fats are the "bad fats", in the sense that they are solid at room temperature and pose a significant health risk to consumers. Heart disease is the leading cause of death here, so I'm actually totally behind this long-awaited ban.

Specific foods will require petitions to be approved for trans fat ingredients. I'm thinking this will include things like butter or lard.

I imagine it has something to do with the average consumer not necessarily being aware of all the trans fats in their food, whereas cigarettes are notoriously dangerous and there's no question of how unhealthy each cigarette is.

Banning any substance that people willingly put into their bodies is morally wrong. If we had better labeling laws, then people would know what's in their food and would be able to make their own informed decision. That's the utopia, not banning anything that's remotely harmful.

I don't think I've ever said "oppression" in any of my arguments. No one's being oppressed, but that doesn't give the government the right to ban things that people willingly consume. I know plenty of people who choose to put trans fats in their food, too, so you can't even say that nobody does it. The simple fact of the matter is that the only person who can decide what you can and can't consume is you. I don't care if my viewpoint is obnoxious, it's still what I believe.

If the amount of trans fat in a serving is below a gram, companies can advertise it as having 0 trans fat. At most, it's recommended no more than 2g of trans fat a day, preferably 0. If some were to have multiple servings with 1/2 a gram that would go over the allowance. They should at least tighten the label recommondations.

There's somebody who comes into my restaurant who's alergic to some kind of shit they put in food. So they ask if the cinamon buns being sold has that stuff in it.

We figure, no. So they go and eat it. And they get an allergic reaction. So, I did some research.

In the cinamon, in the label, the particular ingredient that the person was allergic to, wasn't listed. But, I did a broader search and found that under the "natural ingrediants" category the company stuffed a shitload of hidden stuff into it.

One of that being the ingredient my customer was allergic to.

If they were forced to put a big label on their shitty crops, it would be much, much, less of a big deal. The ideal world isn't where everything bad is banned. The ideal world is where bad things are clearly labeled as such, and people can knowingly choose to still eat them.

Let's say that right now that bill is passed. Trans fats get nuked from foods. But, let's say there's a market and people start seeling trans fats.

If your food had trans fat forcefully removed from it without your consent, are you, right now, telling me that you would go to the store, buy a big fucking barrel of trans fat and slather it into your food just because it was taken away?
