Their government is mostly modeled on the old Soviet one, but China is really communist in name only these days. Authoritarian? Without a doubt, yes. But if Mao rose from the grave tomorrow, he would be appalled with what he saw. Globalization and the encouragement of private enterprise are not exactly the foremost tenants of revolutionary communism.

I somewhat agree, but China is massive. Not all of it is like Hong Kong, which is arguably the freest city on the planet right now.

I wouldn't call Hong Kong a free city right now. Especially when the Beijing frontman who is administering the current election graduated from Kim Il Sung University (no bull, that's where he got his education). Beijing has been tightening the noose recently.

No wonder the Hong Kong Chinese are protesting...

What bothers me is that Hong Kong is part of China, yet its people seem to have a different set of rights and beliefs than the rest of the country. Why can't the rest of that country be more like that city?
