Theresa May is forming the new cabinet

Phillip Hammond as Chancellor.

Boris as Secretary of a gutted Foreign Office.

Amber Rudd, former Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, is now in the Home Office.

Michael Fallon is remaining as Defence Secretary.

David Davis is Brexit Minister.

Liam Fox is to head a brand new Department for International Trade.

Elizabeth Truss is Justice Secretary.

Damian Green has taken the DWP.

Chris Grayling is in Transport.

Andrea Leadsom in Environment.

Jeremy Hunt is staying on at Health.

Justine Greening is Education.

Sajid Javid is now in the Department for Communities and Local Government.

David Davis, arch-Brexiteer and opponent of May, is currently in Number 10. Might beat Liam Fox for post of Minister for Brexit.

EDIT: Fox is also in No 10 now. No idea what he or Davis will get.

Overall, I'm pretty happy with the appointments. Hammond is an ally of May, and is likely to me more amenable to May's desire to loosen austerity despite his hawkish image; he's a steady hand to have on the wheel, which is what we need.

She managed to keep Boris in the inner circle while basically gutting the Foreign Office and handing the most important jobs to the fairly reasonable Davis and Fox. Fallon remaining at Defence is also a good move in terms of continuity/stability.

Rudd is meh.

The rest of the appointments are to come tomorrow.

It's pretty much a "fuck you" to David Cameron's ability to pick competent ministers.

CORRECTION: Hunt was not sacked, and will be staying in Health.

What do you reckon the chances of a general election are to renew the mandate? I doubt we'll see one tbh but it keeps being kicked around by the papers.

Highly unlikely.

Due to the 2011 Fixed Terms Parliament Act, the only way to have an early election is either through a vote of no confidence in the government or a parliamentary super-majority to call for an early one. I also imagine May is less concerned with having a democratic mandate than she is sorting out the shit-show she has been handed.

Smart move combining the Energy and Climate Change Department with Business and Industry tbf.

Cameron made a lot of noises about delivering a One Nation Conservative agenda, which is basically a way of saying a less Thatcherite and more centrist/centre-Left kind of conservatism. He made some moves in this direction, but it looks like May is kicking it into high-gear.

In terms of our withdrawal from the EU, Davis is the most important man right now.

I also think her decision is less to do with putting it on the heads of the people who 'fucked it up'--if she felt that way, she would've actually campaigned instead of being an incredibly quiet, but outspokenly Eurosceptic, Remainer. It feels more like her trying to reconcile with Brexiteers by putting them in the positions they most want.

Sounds more like Brexiters put in places where they would put the most effort into their work.

E.g. Remainers in the positions for negotiations with the EU could sympathetically accept lesser deals, whilst Brexiters are negotiating purely with the UK in mind, and have had such ideas for quite a while.

Sounds sorta selfish in some respects, but it's more beneficial for the UK and as already shown these last 3 weeks, politics can be cut-throat.
