I've written and deleted about three completely different responses to your quick and small counter argument. I wont deny the quick and immediate preservation of the Union is desired, but I just have one question which has made its way into all the different counter arguments I had written for you.

Do you see any outcome on the horizon that doesn't end in the further divide of 330 million people? If neither group is happy with a system that forces them together, a divorce is the only logical choice for a sliver of a chance at happiness.

There was a thread on /pol/ a few days ago that had me thinking about it for a bit; and of course every general election year since 2012 has had the idea float around. If the idea is on people's mind, it it truly a leap? Even if the topic is silly now, it's just kicking the can down the road with the way things currently are and heading.

Especially with the whole "not my president" concept which I can understand why someone would be that way. You voted for your candidate but got someone so unbelievably and fundamentally different from you ideologically, why would you give that individual any support? Couple that with your congressional representation also possibly getting the shaft (and possibly the whole branch being useless, which most Americans believe) and you're left with an entire government that is passively indifferent towards your existence at best and actively trying to get rid of you at worst.

This is why back on B.old I was so adamant about people trying to get more involved with their state & local governments; especially the younger generation which doesn't vote as much as they should but they sure will preach about their ideas. Instead of trying to bend an entire country to their political will, they should get involved in the political system that directly affects them on a regular basis. People would probably be much happier and less frustrated with the federal system if they spent even a fraction of the energy they put into national involvement into either their state or city governments.
