Let's talk about schools and how they're becoming more invasive

So within the last few years I'm sure you guys have noticed a serious rise in the amount of school suspension that are given to students for activities done outside the school. The school administration has no authority over the student at home. So why do so many kids keep getting suspended for Facebook posts and tweets? Both of which have nothing to do with the school.

For example if I tweeted something that the school didn't like they could suspend me.

In the past the school had absolutely no power over you when you left the campus. So what makes them think they have power over your digital self?

Fundamentally, you have to realise a school is essentially a business.

They'll regulate what they can in order to preserve their image, ethical or not.

I'm not sure if all states do this, but California practices in loco parentis, which means the school acts as your parent/guardian from the time you leave the house to the time you get home. They are responsible for things you do even off the campus grounds.

I'm not sure how that extends to tweets/facebook/etc. Technology always progresses faster than the law.

When you release something, like an opinion on twitter for example under your name or image then you are expressing yourself just as the same as in real life. They might have to suspend you in case that you voice your concerns in an nonconstructive manner that does not represent the school's not only beliefs, but education that you should have.

I've always been bugged by suspension (including in-school suspension) as a punishment. My high school had really strict tardiness policy, which dictated that missing the final bell for each period (about 3 minutes) meant you couldn't go to class and had to go sit in the cafeteria for in-school suspension. They called it 'Sweep' because they had staff going through the halls finding kids that were late, on their way to class, to go collect them. Teachers weren't allowed to let students enter class after the final bell, though a few real MVP's sheltered people.

You're confusing the analogy. The school would find it more profitable to make the effort to have higher grades. A school expelling sub-par students only happens in the private sector and isn't allowed in the public sector.

Plus it'd be a PR disaster for a state school to do that.

My uncle has to pay a £10000 fine because his kids missed a school week.

He has 3 kids, all below the ages of 12. A week off at that age doesn't mean shit.

Yep thats how my schools were.

You could on your street. Miles away from the school and get in a fight, but if you haven't physically been home yet, you can get suspended.

We used to have kids run home put their shit away and then fight at 4:00 so they wouldn't get in trouble with school.

Schools are NOT the parent nor is it their responsibility to act like one. I don't care what people say. Schools are meant for education and whatever happens outside of that zone is not the business of the school and the lives of children are to be regulated by their actual parents
