You can't tell me that you've never argued that a dictionary definition was wrong before. To discuss a point you're making people have to learn your definition first, and that's simply not possible unless someone who experienced a similar discussion with you or you yourself tell them.
I've argued that dictionary definitions tend to be oversimplified and generalized for the laymen population, and are therefore more of a guide to words than true, nuanced, gathered definitions. Just to be clear.

But yeah, in order to argue with me, you sort of need to understand my language. Some people have been patient enough over the years to learn it, others haven't.

Besides, I dislike the term "my definition"--I prefer my interpretation. "Definition" implies that I'm trying to impose my standard on everyone else, and depending on the argument, that may not be what I'm trying to do.

Sometimes, yeah, the actual definition is shit and I'll attempt to redefine it entirely. But that's rare.

Depends on the type of privacy we're talking here

 privacy from normal people:
So people won't know your ins and outs, stalk you, exploit you etc.(you know personal credentials)

privacy from the govt:
considering that most forms of govt already have that form of info(personal credentials), it's a little different. privacy is good for the fact that you can do things without being monitored(legal or not) and to an extant not being accountable for. It's just a sense of security really.

Why is not being monitored automatically a good thing? My whole argument is that I think it's irrational to give a fuck about that shit. Ir-ra-tion-al.

No one else should want privacy either. It's for scared children.

So you wouldn't give a fuck if people had your social security number and robbed you of all your money and ruined your credit?

Also when it comes to the govt watching you... for me, I don't want the govt seeing everything i do. I don't want someone of a higher power knowing everything about and to have the potential to use that from of info against me. What would happen if laws became stricter? things you like doing are now illegal. wouldn't it suck if you're being watched so you can't do whatever it is that you want to do?

why? i stated why, but this all goes back to the "what if" case. what if the govt. had the power to know everything about you and they were corrupt enough to find you and do what ever they want with you. I'm not saying transparency is a bad thing for some, but being forced to be transparent would kinda suck

but like i said this all what if

Verb, in your hypothetical future where the government keeps surveillance on everything and everyone, is the state equally transparent to the people?

Threats to national security aside?

I mean, the government serves us. If we don't have the right to conduct surveillance on them like they do on us, the entire system is reversed and broken.

But i would have a real reason to be cautious. Look at all the other countries where citizens are heavily monitored. They're pretty crappy places to live.( North Korea, China, etc)

Here's a thought Verb, would you be comfortable giving me the passwords to your Sep7 and email accounts? After all, if you have no problem abdicating your privacy to the state, then you should have no problem abdicating your privacy to me.

You have nothing to hide, after all, right?
I'd have no problem with that at all, no. I'd need a good reason, though.
I want to see if you really do believe any of this anti natalist crap.

PM me your details when your ready.
Actually, no, I'd be against that--because you could read the PMs that I've received.

That crosses a line, because now you're invading other people's privacy, as well.

So... on second thought, no, I'd be against that.
But only because it imposes on other people who might not agree with me.
So I guess privacy is important then.

This simple fact alone under-minded Verbatim's vehemently stupid argument of "fuck privacy". I think he means "fuck privacy for everyone but me"

Also, this is just another clickbait post with Verbatim parading around how right he is with absolutely NO evidence to back up his claims and ignoring all reasons against his own, no matter how clearly substantial they are. Remember, arguing with Verbatim is like arguing with a child - he has a tantrum and says you're wrong, but fails to show why. But he'll continue to say he's right until you're brain dead, because you can't beat stupid, especially if stupid is determined.

For example, taken from the OP directly -

"Assuming the government has good intentions (and why in the fuck wouldn't they)"

LOL. Verbatim is so out of touch with reality. Ever heard of the Soviet Union, dipshit? Yeah, I'm sure they really had good intentions in mind when they were slaughtering millions of their own and sending innocent people to the gulag. How about North Korea? Yeah, they had good intentions for their people, right? Public executions, torture, poverty, but YEAH! THE GOVERNMENT TOTALLY HAS GOOD INTENTIONS LOL

You fucking dolt. You're pathetically out of touch with reality. I almost pity it, but then I remember you CHOOSE to be so delusional.

No one's patting Meta on the back. He provided the evidence--that doesn't deserve much of an applause.

I then responded to it, and no one's responded to that yet.
Thing is, it's not that irrational. Humans have, for most of their history, lived in circumstances where group selection, herd mentality, suspicion and domination of bad actors was the way of life. We function with an innate social facet and power structures; institutions designed by us to exert power are always going to change behaviour and emotional states precisely because it's conducive to not being punished.

I also can't think of any good reason I should care that the government has access to my personal information. It isn't being used against me, and it's ultimately collected for the greater purpose of maintaining national security. I would take sacrificed privacy over terror attacks and day of the week, and think it's unbelievably selfish and irrational to suggest otherwise. Plus, it's not like I'm actually sacrificing anything that matters; my privacy still applies in the areas I need it to. It isn't being used to embarrass me, or doing anything that affects my everyday life.

I don't understand it when people throw fits over the fact that government spying happens. Who cares?

"I want privacy!"

Why? What's gonna happen to you? If you were never told about the fact that a lot of your personal information is tracked, would you have ever suffered a negative consequence? Would any harm ever come to you? No, and that's why it shouldn't matter to you. Unless I'm missing something about what the NSA does, and I definitely could be, I don't see them abusing the information. Somebody enlighten me to reasons that the government is doing something immoral, and don't say anything solely based on the desire to have things kept secret.
