I personally don't see anything wrong with what she's wearing, but if it's against the policy it's against the policy.

Yoga pants aren't really meant to be worn in a professional environment anyway. If the school never clarified this, then maybe I'd see where she's coming from, but somehow I suspect that it did.

my highschool wouldnt have had a problem with that outfit... and my highschool didnt let girls show their shoulders, wear tank tops, or shorts/skirts/dresses that ended 5in above the knee.

that being said i dont see any soggy knees or rape culture in holding to school dress code.

Stupid policies are to be challenged. Otherwise, they risk remaining there.

if it's against the policy it's against the policy.

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
It's an issue which is well outlined in the second spoiler'd response. If guys can wear gym attire outside the gym then why aren't girls allowed to do the same.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
Stupid policies are to be challenged. Otherwise, they risk remaining there.
Some policies may be stupid, but that doesn't make them detrimental. The only people even mildly inconvenienced by this policy are those dumb enough to think it's worth challenging.

School's make stupid decisions all the time, but since there are all these over-protective parents, you can't change them.

And instead of banning yoga pants and leggings because idiots want to walk around without pants on, why don't they just... you know, ban tights?
Because they don't want to argue with every stupid high schooler that will try to challenge it.

Exactly. It would be such a waste of time to try to differentiate between them. Some leggings are very opaque. Some yoga pants can be pretty thin. Better just axe them all.

part of me wants to think like this, because of my firsthand experience with sexual harassment in public school.
Quote
this is why dress codes shouldnt be a thing and appropriate dress should be evaluated case by case. many yoga pant/leggings/jeggings/whatever are fine like this, but a lot of them are really form fitting or translucent, and like it or not, that sort of thing DOES distract hormonal adolescents. my school had a light policy about these things (only leggings were banned, and that was at the end of my schooling) and we had a pretty serious sexual harassment problem. then again, its also a Title I school, so thats probably part of it, but all the same, i think its best for the girls that they avoid wearing revealing/form fitting clothing without doing something to cover it up (like this girl did with her shirt.) in the same vein, guys shouldnt be allowed to wear compression shorts outside of an athletic competition. you just cant trust teenagers to act rational when it comes to sexuality.

another part of me wants to think like this.

censorship is fucking stupid, let them wear whatever they want as long as they arent half naked.

It's not so much sexual titillation as it is being within a professional working environment. Part of the purpose of school is to instill students with the tools and attitudes towards preparing for the workplace. Wearing yoga pants to school is just as uncouth as wearing sweatpants and a t shirt that hasn't been washed in a week to your job. It doesn't posit the image that you're prepared to work your hardest.

Why is this even a discussion then? They outlawed all the articles (as far as we know), and yet there's still a case right here being reported on about it.

I would still like to see the handbook for the school. If yoga pants are banned then punishment is really unavoidable; that doesn't mean that she should have been sent home or that it's a just ban.

What about leggings then, since they've also been dragged into this. They aren't athletic attire and they aren't undergarments. Banning everything even similar just because you don't want to hassle with it is just silly. Idiots will try to argue it, but then again they are arguing it now. It's stupid to ban everything else because idiots want to knowingly not wear pants.

Leggings are not pants. Leggings are meant to be worn under other articles of clothing.

Axing leggings and yoga pants altogether avoids this whole silly argument.

No, tights are undergarments. Leggings aren't tights. There's a difference.

And obviously it isn't avoiding jack, or else we wouldn't be having this discussion. It's just going to bring about more cases because there is a wider ban.

The fact that you and I are even talking about the distinction between leggings, yoga pants, and tights is exactly why such a rule banning them exists.

So instead of people bothering to differentiate, we're just going to cloud the subject with ignorance and pray it goes away.

Ignorance? No matter what the garment, none of those are appropriate attire for school.

The only place yoga pants, or any other variety, belong is in gym class.

oh my god who gives a fuck what you wear

my school was very lenient about this kind of shit, so girls wearing yoga pants is considered normal

so from my perspective, this is one of those who-cares types of issues
you just look really really uptight if you honestly want to maintain dress codes in 2015--you're not wrong, but like... lighten up?

it's not a big deal

It's a local story on social media. They're not going to the news about it or anything, it's just a friend of a friend's parent sharing an experience.

Yeah, but all I can find are screenshots circulating on Tumblr and Twitter. I can't track it back to the original. Something like this is really easy to fake and make a scene about.

Being able to track it back to the original and find out the school's dress code rules could possibly put this to bed quickly.

Max, I'm sure you can understand why I'm not going to post the original Facebook post here.
I do understand that, but I'm sure you understand my skepticism toward the whole thing. The internet is littered with pics of random girls with stories that are entirely fabricated, and this could be, too.

Even if this was true, it's pretty much a non-story. One of two things happened here:

A) Yoga pants are against the dress code and she refused to comply, and was then sent home from school.

or

B) Yoga pants aren't against the dress code and the administration did a dumb thing. "Hey, we're sorry we over-reacted. See you tomorrow morning" is pretty much all there is to do.

If it breaks the school dress code then it doesn't matter. The whole yoga pants fad has proven to be distracting and a slippery slope It makes sense for the school to have banned them. This has nothing to do with "body shaming".

At my old high school, girls are allowed to wear yoga pants or leggings as long as they are wearing a long shirt. So the above picture would be acceptable. But every school's dress code is different and even if you disagree with it, it should be followed. Making this a sexism issue is a reach for sure.
A slippery slope? The hell?
Basically yoga pants turned into leggings which turned into see-through leggings.
