Alrighty Sep7agon, as you may know most of my close friends are pretty hardcore liberals, so I've been seeing this stuff floating around social media today. Apparently some high school girl got sent home because of what she was wearing, pictured here:
Spoiler
Here's a quote from a family member:
Quote
Today, my sister was sent home from school for wearing the clothes in the picture below. And I'm sorry but I have to stand up for my family and for women who are degraded and judged for their bodies and clothing everyday. People wonder why women feel insecure about their bodies or what they wear.. And it's beause you're told your clothing is inappropriate when you're completely fully clothed, even when you're not showing cleavage or anything. How about instead of body shaming women, school systems should start teaching 15-18 year old boys to stop degrading women with their eyes and contributing to the rape culture of today's society. Bottom line, girls cannot go to school in comfortable clothes THAT COVER EVERYTHING because school systems are afraid that hormonal boys won't be able to control their eyes and minds. And that is such a bigger problem than worrying about clothing. No, I do not believe that all boys in middle school/high school degrade young women or sexualize their bodies. That is my point.. this is not an inappropriate outfit, yet some are worried it might be seen that way, so they send girls home to change to try to avoid an issue and THAT is the problem.

And then another response:
Spoiler

So I have no idea what the school's dress code is, though let's say, hypothetically, that it generally bans leggings. Without sexualizing this person in any way, my opinion would be that leggings are basically tights and therefore aren't really an appropriate substitution for pants, even when mostly covered by a shirt. The second picture equates yoga pants with Under Armor shirts, though I think the analogy fails if you compare apples to apples and put a picture of a guy in compression shorts next to it. I think most sane people would agree it's inappropriate for a guy to wear compression shorts by themselves in an academic setting. In athletics it's fine, and if you look at uniforms from cheerleading to volleyball you can see that schools in general allow these types of clothes for those specific uses.

So the question I pose to you is if you think this is an unfair reaction by the school, and whether a dress code is really a result of body shaming or boys "degrading women with their eyes" and more of a policy to keep school at least a partially professional environment.

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
It's a stupid decision by the school, but trying to shoehorn identity politics into this is even stupid. There's nothing sexist about this.

If only she could have made her point without any bullshit "rape culture" references...

And Turkey, aren't compression shorts considered underwear, socially? I see yoga pants and leggings as no less legitimate pants than skinny jeans or tight fitting sweat pants.

I think schools need to revisit their discipline codes in general. In my school district if you fight, even if you are defending yourself from a life threatening situation, you get suspended, and possible expulsion. Don't even get me started on "Bullying".

It kind of depends. I wear a form of compression shorts when I run races, and my bike shorts are basically compression shorts with padding in it. There are also some that are more underwear than not. Yoga pants are for all intents and purposes the same as compression pants.

I don't see a problem with yoga pants. They're very comfortable and when otherwise dressed appropriately, won't show anything.

Also, leggings aren't tights. Leggings are generally allowed in the school dress code from what I've seen because they are thick enough not to reveal anything. Tights, however, aren't: they are general translucent and intended for wearing underneath something else.

I do wish she hadn't used the words "rape culture" and "male gaze", it makes me feel silly even reading her argument.

I think that's what's being contested here. Why things like yoga pants are against the rules while other things aren't.

I'm not saying that this leans against women, though. There are plenty of things boys can't wear either that I think are silly.

It's really easy to look up the school's dress code policy on their website, if we knew what the school was. That would put this to rest really quickly.

It's not really about the school's policy --  I think they were wrong in sending her home. It's about the validity of claiming dress codes are misogynist and if we create our social rules with inherent bias against either sex.

Well there's plenty of things that guys can't wear, either. It's become acceptable for school-aged girls to wear absurdly tight and/or revealing clothes, which is, in fact, a distraction. Agree or disagree with the rule, yoga pants fall into that category. Are yoga pants legitimate exercise attire? Yes. Are they comfortable? Yes. Do they show off your butt and legs? Yes, and that's the point of contention.

If we really want to have the discussion about dress codes being misogynist, we really need to address the point within our society with how women dress, not within the school itself.

If it breaks the school dress code then it doesn't matter. The whole yoga pants fad has proven to be distracting and a slippery slope It makes sense for the school to have banned them. This has nothing to do with "body shaming".

At my old high school, girls are allowed to wear yoga pants or leggings as long as they are wearing a long shirt. So the above picture would be acceptable. But every school's dress code is different and even if you disagree with it, it should be followed. Making this a sexism issue is a reach for sure.

But just because they ban yoga pants, leggings, or what have you, doesn't just for girls.  Sure, girls are the ones that wear them and get them banned, but they're banned entirely.  So neither gender can wear them.  Now if guys get away with it, then yeah, I'd say that's sexism.  But if they're banned entirely, then they're banned entirely.

No they wouldn't. My school had tons of women who were wearing extremely skimpy clothing, and I wasn't even remotely distracted by that.

I don't really give enough shits about the whole issue to even consider demonstrating for/against it. And neither should you. It's just the choice of clothing that others want to make.

Yeah, but you're autistic.
Spoiler
That's a joke

But if we're really banning things for being "distracting", let's ban girls from wearing sandals as well. Think of the poor boys with developing foot fetishes who can't focus in class because Clara in the next seat over just got her toes painted yesterday.

I'm not saying girls shouldn't be wearing yoga pants, I just think schools have legitimate grievances against them and it makes sense for them not to be allowed. But outside of school? Go for it.

Tights aren't even pants, they're undergarments. Leggings and yoga pants are okay in terms of how revealing they are.

And instead of banning yoga pants and leggings because idiots want to walk around without pants on, why don't they just... you know, ban tights?
