No like, if Mitt ran in 2008 and won, we'd still have Obamacare in nearly identical form. Only difference would have been that the Republicans wouldn't have forced the sequester because of it.

Your vote always matters. The reason 2000 happened is because of how tight the turnout was. Had more people voted, I doubt we would have run into the same problem.

Here's the problem - hypothetically, if every citizen in the entire country voted on election day - the only states that a candidate would need to win are California, Texas, New York, Florida, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, and North Carolina - the population of those states already cover half of the US' population.

So - a candidate could simply represent the needs of ten states - generally all along the Eastern Seaboard - and win election without stepping foot in any of the other 40 states. We already have that problem with candidates focusing on swing and battleground states - but those at least require a candidate to deal with different issues in various parts of the country.
