This just isn't true, though. There are tons of jobs that don't require degrees with plenty of room for advancement and the ability to earn a degree later on to qualify for higher positions.

It is, to an extent. There's some evidence that over- (or more accurately, mis-) education has led employers to demand a college degree for jobs which don't really require them.

The literature isn't especially clear, however.
