At what point do these things stop being isolated, unrelated incidents of idiocy and start becoming a problem with the religion?

When people stop reading the bible and simply buy into what any Preacher says. I think I've made it abundantly clear what Christianity is truly about: loving people and loving God.
But the Bible clearly states that being gay isn't cool.

How many Pastors have lusted after a woman in their life? Lied?
We all sin. So we all aren't cool in that area.

But we can have redemption for free.

Your scripture would indicate otherwise.

Don't even try that, you read my thread detailing my beliefs. They aren't something I made up, they are straight from Jesus' Greatest commandment. A "greatest Commandment" trumps all others.

Quote
Matthew 22:36-40
Jesus replied: β€œ'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
So what of all the passages that contradict that?

come again?

Quite ironic, considering the Christian stance on suicide.

There's a difference between sinful acts which you have control over, and being gay. You don't choose to be gay. If God created someone that way, and being gay is sinful, that's a pretty shitty thing for him to do.

I'd be interested to know what the biblical definition of neighbour is.

Although, I feel compelled to say that wise teachings is not an inference of divinity. So, y'know, you can love people without the contradictory scripture and shaky metaphysics.

This is Jesus we're talking about, He IS the authority. God Himself, so in referring to the Bible you are wrong. If you mean your own views, well obviously I can't help that.

It's not just popular opinion. Science and research also indicate that it isn't a choice.

If that's the case, and God created people with the intention of some being gay, it's pretty fucked up that being gay is a sin.

I do believe it is a choice. But do I think being gay is unnatural?
Of course not. Because we have a sin-nature. We are naturally selfish, self-preservation and all that.

Do people have a choice? To me they do. But they are "inclined" to do sinful acts.

In case you haven't noticed, we aren't going to convince each other of anything. This is always pointless.

I'm not denying Jesus is the authority of the New Testament. I'm just saying, by virtue of having Jesus as the authority, the New Testament isn't a book of real authority. It just isn't. None of the moral teachings of the Bible require religious devotion to fulfill, and most people rather succinctly ignore the immoral or questionable ones.

But, like I say, there's no evidence for the divinity of Jesus apart from the New Testament - which isn't especially reliable. So I'm inclined to split the difference and say the entire thing is largely irrelevant nowadays.

Why do you insist on ignoring science and research on the subject that indicates otherwise?

If it's biological, and in no way a choice, would you feel differently about God's choice to create gay people as sinners?

I'm at a loss if you seriously moralise any of those activities, with the exception of the fifth and first.

Which, again, don't need religion.

Nor does the last one funnily enough, but I wouldn't necessarily call that one moral.

A gay person wanting to be accepted into a religion is like a black guy wanting to join the KKK.
So a gay person cannot believe in God?
No more than a black person can believe in white supremacy.
But there are plenty of hetero Christians that don't believe there's anything wrong with being gay and still are Christian. Can gays not believe the same?
it's well known that many religious people interpret their particular holy book in ways that conform to their pre-conceived values. taken at face value the bible literally says that homosexuality is a sin and an affront to god.
But wouldn't that mean that anyone, gay, straight, or otherwise, could not be a Christian if they were accepting of gays?
I'm not sure, been a while since I've cracked my bible open. Is there any scripture that says tolerating gays is a sin? If not that would imply that it's OK to tolerate them but that they'll got to hell if they keep porking others of the same sex.

You don't go to Hell for "being gay". You go to Hell because of sin.
Performing homosexual acts is seen as sin. So, performing the acts.

Do we all have sinful desires? Heck yes we do. We're all sinners. The only reason people get to heaven is because of Christ's forgiveness, not because we did the right thing enough.

There will be many people who were Gay, in Heaven. There will be many people who were drunkards, abusers, anything under the sun. Why? because they repented. Nobody is beyond forgiveness.
Have you been to heaven? Have you met anyone from there? How do you know this? Sure, some might say that's the case, but how do you know it to be true?

How many people have been gay then later became straight?
If people are hard-wired to be attracted to one gender, why do people flip-flop on that?

And no, people aren't hard-wired to be attracted to one sex. What the fuck do you think asexualism and bisexualism are?

You mean aside from those who were forced into being "straight" by their friends, family, community, or conversion "therapy" group? Probably none. If you have the ability to choose to be straight or gay, you're probably bisexual, or somewhere in between all of that.

You're not hard-wired to be attracted to ONE gender, but your sexual orientation IS hard-wired. Sexual orientation is a continuum; it's fluid. Some people are 100% straight. Some are 83%. Some are 5%. Some are 0%.

Plenty of people experiment sexually in high school and college. That doesn't mean they're choosing their sexual orientation.

You mean that confusing time of physiological change and sexual experimentation? And you don't try to control for any variation?

People don't just switch sexuality. If "curing the gays" worked, science would be able to verify it and lay out a single method that actually worked. It's not surprising that the methods used by such abominable practitioners are largely religious and divergent.

Not everything is an opinion.

Is the temperature that water boils an opinion? Is it an opinion that the Earth revolves around the sun? No. We know these things to be true. You can assert otherwise about sexual orientation all you want, but without any supporting documentation, research, studies, etc, you haven't a leg to stand on.
