Well nothing on Earth is perfect, so why waste your time here?

Non-existence is perfect.

And life isn't. Either accept that and live your life, or refuse to and go back to that perfect nonexistence. It's going to drive you mad to expect perfection from anything in the world.

Under my current belief system, I don't get to go back to non-existence. Only children who are not born do not exist -- I still exist after death.

It's not about expecting perfection, it's about forming ideals to strive towards that, even if unachievable, still keep the bar high enough to force us as a species to transcend what's been done before.

I'm torn on it and wanted to hear some other thoughts on it.
I can't see a problem with it. As long as they're not trying to force views on their children. That happens all the time with Religion, it's basically the reason Religion is still around because of how parents indoctrinate their children, There is a guy in the clouds.....

Yep. How often do you hear about someone who was raised in a non-religious house becoming religious later in life? Pretty much never. That's the whole reason there's all kinds of milestones for kids in religion. Baptism, confirmation, bar mitzvah, etc.

Me, though admittedly, I wouldn't really say I buy into it for theistic reasons just yet.

You're a Christian who doesn't believe in God? What.

Correct. I think the Bible makes a lot of pragmatic sense, and from a social perspective, I get more out of being theistic than I do being atheistic.

My problem right now is that I can't believe in the superstitious parts of the bible while remaining intellectually honest with myself.

I mean, if you live in the 1950's mentality that women and coloreds are below the white man, then I guess that makes sense.

No, of course I don't think that.

I probably shouldn't be having this conversation with you, anyway.

Probably not. Believing in Christianity is dumb to being with; doing so without believing in God is even dumber.

I wish your belief set were true. I'd do anything to exist after death.

But nope. Everything you are is your mind. There's no soul, and your consciousness and personality are destroyed with your brain. It's depressing.

I disagree. Having a finite amount of time to live is what makes it worth living.

Not really. You're plunged out of a peaceful nonexistence in the void and told you have to do all of these things suddenly. And if you don't, you become a pariah. Then once you maybe start to get your footing, it's all over.

Kind of cruel.

In his defense, he didn't say anything about race and gender. He only said that he finds the Bible to be a decent source of moral inspiration. At least that's what I got from his post.

Max's point is that racism and sexism are rampant in the Bible. Which is true.
