Quote
In 2012, a contest for US schools to win a gig by Taylor Swift was hijacked by members of the 4chan website, who piled on its online vote in an attempt to send the pop star to a school for deaf children.

Now, imagine a similar stunt being pulled for a general election, if voting could be done online. Far-fetched? Not according to Rick Falkvinge, founder of Sweden’s Pirate party.

“Voting over the internet? Would you really want 4chan to decide your next government?” he said, during a debate about democracy and technology in London, organised by the BBC as part of its Democracy Day event.

Falkvinge was responding to a question about whether online voting – or even voting from smartphones – would encourage more people to vote. Besides online pranksters, his reservations included the potential ability of governments and security agencies to snoop on people’s online votes.

“Surveillance is so ubiquitous, we are at a crossroads. Yes, technology can be used for good, but we are also in a Big Brother society well beyond the nightmare dystopias of the 1950s,” he said.

“Searching online is as close to a mind-reading machine as we’ve ever come. And that is now eavesdropped by governments. We are arriving at a point where the government has the ability to hold you accountable for how you vote. That is a 180-degree reversal of power.”

His fellow panelist Arvind Gupta, head of social media for India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), agreed. “It should be private: your vote is a secret ballot. We have to ensure privacy and the secrecy of the ballot,” he said.
I see the concern, but I also would really like to be able to cast my ballot from home...

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
Not at all. Unless there is a method of keeping everything completely secure. Just imagine how many people would be trying to hack online voting if it were an option.

I neither fear, nor despise.
Haven't we had major issues with ballot machines being hacked or tampered with during Presidential Elections?

NEVER.

The best way to have a secure election is to keep it physical--right now, you can't just fill out and submit dozens of paper ballots in broad daylight and not get caught. Any digital system would get hacked eventually, and there would be almost nothing anybody could do about it except have a do-over, which would almost certainly produce a lower voter turnout.

That's not even considering the possibility of outright corruption or inevitable privacy violations.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
We'd definitely see larger turnouts, but I seriously question the abilities of the government to maintain security and prevent fraudulent internet voting.

Remember, these are the people who say that Internet Explorer is the the safest web browser out there. I actually wouldn't doubt if they made the voting portal only work on IE like AKO does...

Could they create their own program to download for voting and would that be any more secure?

They could potentially, but, remember the Healthcare.gov launch?

I think we should fucking kill the people who want the electoral college voting system, first. Online voting is something we don't need until later.

I'm inclined to agree. The Electoral College has served its purpose, and it's time for it to go.

the fucking electoral college needs to go first of all. Popular vote should win straight up. And I'm sick and tired of the "waaah voting needs to be easier, voting requirements are racist"

If you can't be bothered to vote, you most likely aren't well versed on the issues or even care about them. If you could vote online imagine how many dumbasses would just blindly vote for what their friend and family vote for. Seriously I could go on forever. This is a bit extreme but I would like a blind election where you only get to know the politicians stances on issues and past policies. No political party bias or voting for the black guy/woman/ white guy just because that's what they are.

Things like voter ID aren't necessarily racist, but it does make it more difficult for the elderly and poor to vote, and minorities make up a lot of the latter group. Voter ID laws are wholly unnecessary and the timing at which these laws are [attempted to be] passed is usually close to an election in order to keep people out of the polls.

Voter ID laws are wholly unnecessary and the timing at which these laws are [attempted to be] passed is usually close to an election in order to keep people out of the polls.

And then you have things in some states like college IDs don't count but your gun registration forms do which are clearly aimed at keeping young people from voting. That and these states usually sit on the applications for voter IDs areas that are likely to vote democrat or just end up throwing out their applications under the excuse that they're felons despite the fact that in many cases the applicants have a clean record.

These voter ID laws are not being put in place to prevent voting fraud (which isn't even an issue as it's extremely rare. If you put together the number of confirmed cases over the last 15 years you likely wouldn't even break 50). They're simply being put in place to suppress voter turn out.

In short, wide spread voter fraud is basically a myth and recent attempts to impose voter ID laws in various states are nothing more than a thinly veiled guise of making sure certain (typically left leaning) demographics don't vote.
