Even if you could make it work, there's nothing to suggest it'd be superior to capitalism.

In communism there is no currency. Communists that I've spoken to say that bartering would still be a common practice (ex: I'll build you a guitar if you build me a canoe), but that profit wouldn't be a motivating factor in the exchange of goods and services.
