You all should read Peter Watts' Maelstrom. It's a cyberpunk novel where the main character inadvertently uses memes to destroy the Internet's neural net infrastructure and awaken humanity's collective unconscious longings for death, thus pretty much ending the world.

Oh, and it was written in 2001 before memes actually started leaking into reality.
It's pretty fucked up at times, but I really liked the book.
