People vote on their best interests. When you take the general consensus on what people vote on, you are serving the best interest of the most amount of people.

Of course this falls apart when you consider moral issues and minority's rights...

A democratic republic that is branched into smaller regions (The US) is good, it's when people try to nullify the power of the smaller regions where it starts to go to Hell. I'm pretty sure a lot of people would falsely believe federalizing driver's licenses would somehow be a good thing.

Drivers licenses was just an example on people's opinion on smaller governments. It is an issue I have heard brought up because people don't like the "irrationality" of different states having different rules for their tests. From what I've gathered during election years, people seem to blatantly ignore their local governments. No one seems to care about any certain issue as far as state/city side go. Whenever an issue is brought up (let's say the death penalty), everyone just wants it blanketed under the federal government's power. Either they live in an area where their opinion is a minority and as such want to circumvent it, or they think that their opinion reflects reflects that of an entire country and should be changed accordingly.

We were given smaller governments such as state, city, and county side for more control from us, yet voters seem to want to be part of a system that offers less control and they throw the biggest temper tantrum when their side doesn't hold complete power.

Democracy is legitimised by its capacity to offer both governmental and personal security. The first job of any government is to perpetuate itself, once that is accomplished then we have the space to refine our institutions and policies to the betterment of society as a whole. Democracy is good in this because it is an inclusive institution--parliamentary systems are usually better than congressional--and facilitates bloodless changes of government.

Also, pretty much all developed democracies are specifically constitutional and liberal democracies.

Not really. Voters are usually pretty sociotropic in their voting intentions, although there's some evidence that the state of the economy in the six months approaching the election also has a significant effect. Voting is understood to be rational as a social signal, or form of identity expression, than as a desire to actually swing policy.

Bureaucracy is by design inefficient, and constitutional democracies do not guarantee the absolute protection of rights and equality to all non-majority factions, parties, or peoples due to the human factor of the legal and legislative systems.
