My opinion of conscription is rather tame, but I have a cozy relationship with the idea of military service.

If life doesn't head my way, I plan on either the army or navy.

Being a "nuetral" country, I can't be conscripted for a war as Ireland can't really declare one.

That said, if I thought a war was reasonable declared by Britain I wouldn't be against signing up if it came to it, nor joining up if my own country were invaded (In the British Army or otherwise).

But I completely disagree with conscription, because I'd have no choice, and it comes down to simply what country I'm in and who's in charge. I might have voted against them, I might be completely against the war, and I'd still have to fight it. I find it funny that America is stereotyped as a country of freedom when really that isn't the case.

National Service I think is as far as I'd go to agree with, as Israel does for everyone over 18 for 2 years, given their relationship with everyone else isn't exactly cosy.

There will never be another draft. I don't really see selective service as a draft, though I think it's outdated and unnecessary.

I'll go if I'm drafted, I know how to fight and I'm physically fit enough to get in there, but Canada doesn't have any mandatory military service policies, just jury duty.

In Greece men by the age of 18 are to either get a temporary permit, or must go into military service for at least nine months. If one does not show up then they are noted as deserters and are subject to a court-martial.

I signed the Selective Service a long time ago.. never got a card.. wat? I too refuse to fight any battles that are across the world. I will only accept defending the home land.

I'm not all too fond of the idea of the draft in matters that aren't "holy fuck the shoreline is being stormed by angry ruskies," with "holy fuck, angry Germans are about to take over all of Europe!" being a reasonable exception.

Fun fact: 66% of US forces in WWII were draftees compared to 25% in Vietnam.

As far as I know, Canada's is generally the same. But I stand in the same boat as you. If conscriptions ever went around for some overseas war we have no business in, then I won't go. Only if it's for the defense of the country. And even then, I'm not sure I'd sign up. If there were an invasion in my province I might just grab a weapon and go off on my own. The bigger the group of people, the bigger the target.

However, Canada makes for a poor target for generally anything, which is nice. I won't ever have to jump into any kind of war we have no business in. And likely, never to the defense of our borders either.

I'm not complaining.

I seriously don't know why the draft card is still a thing. The US already has a huge military. If we're at the point where we need MORE, perhaps we have bigger issues and need to start digging bomb shelters to live in.
