Yeah, he should be a hero for leaking evidence of perfectly legal activities that have been known about, and reported on, since the PATRIOT Act was instituted, in addition to leaking information on active overseas surveillance programs that demonstrably aided the enemy, hindering intelligence operations and likely putting American and allied personnel at risk.

What a fucking joke.
You do know that the Patriot Act is illegal, right?
You can make the argument that it goes against the original intentions of the constitution, or that it oversteps the rights and privacy of american citizens (which it certainly does in its current form). But the fact that it is a law makes it by its very definition legal. The fact that the supreme court has upheld it makes it legal. That is not debatable. The argument is whether it is a just or unjust law.

Camnator, is that you?
Well, I guess this discussion is over, seeing as how you have no intelligent retort.
It's true, though. You can't just ignore a law that you personally object to.
Spoiler
Well all have a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.
No, you have the responsibility to change or remove unjust laws. Because disobeying a law will just get you locked up, fined, shot, etc. Disobeying a law, no matter how just you find it, does not exempt you from its punishment.

Civil disobedience is one of the most effective ways to enact change.  Prohibition and segregation would still be around if people didn't deliberately disobey those laws to make a point.

What a fucking joke.
You do know that the Patriot Act is illegal, right? It is against the Constitution, which does mean something because that is still a legal document, one upon which the country was founded. People like to say the Constitution is meaningless because it was made 239 years ago, but it is still what this country is based on, and it needs to be followed. People like you who just allow shit like the Patriot Act to happen, or do not care, are a major problem. Why would you willingly allow your right to privacy to be violated? Do not use the dumbass excuse "I have nothing to hide". That is such an idiotic response to that question.

Frankly, this is a vapid outlook on a complex issue. The Patriot Act is a wide collection of different allocations of power, and to use a blanket statement like "it's illegal" is not only demonstrably incorrect, as it is upheld by Congress and the Supreme Court regardless of your personal interpretation of the 4th Amendment, it is also obscenely imprecise. In addition, the NSA spying tactics existed long before the Patriot Act, so we'd have to discuss specific sections you're referring to. As I've already responded with several times in this thread, you can't just say what they're doing is illegal; it is not. You can't just say it's wrong; you have to defend that claim. I've defended my rebuttal to that claim, and so far nobody has offered a counterpoint.

You can go on and on about how some law doesn't fit the Constitution, but if you provide no compelling argument, why should you expect me to take you seriously?

Why? I don't have anything to hide. Why should I give a fuck about my privacy?
Why should anyone, but a criminal, care?

Having something to hide has nothing to do with whether you should have privacy or not. Why the fuck should I be treated like a criminal if I have done nothing wrong?
Being treated like a criminal has nothing to do with whether you should have privacy or not, either. I don't think innocent people should be treated like criminals, but that's a separate issue.

The question is, why should I care if my privacy is being violated?
Let's assume that all suspects are treated with absolute fairness.

Why would you not care? So you would be perfectly fine with anyone going through your shit at any time for no reason at all?
Yes.

I've often said that if I had a book that contained every single detail about my life, I would hand it to anyone who wanted to read it. There's nothing in my life that I'm so ashamed of that I'd honestly care if anyone found out about it. Everything I've done is part of who I am, or who I used to be, and I'd rather embrace it as part of my history than shun it. That doesn't seem very healthy to me.

The only exceptions are things like... you know, my SSN, and stuff like that. But that's more an issue of security, and not privacy.

But no, when it comes to "embarrassing" facts, like what type of porn I watch, or... what kind of pajamas I used to wear as a kid? I mean, what else is there? What have I done in my life that's so horrible, I should it keep a secret from everybody? There's nothing. So, I have no qualms whatsoever with having any details of my life disseminated. Zero.

And I don't think anyone else should, either.

We are talking about your rights to privacy in your every day life.
And I listed two very real, every day life examples. Your point?
Quote
You should not have to share every detail of your life with others if you do not wish to. What is difficult to understand about that?
What is so difficult to understand why I don't care about my privacy? At all? Whatsoever?

Because it's completely irrational?

Maybe if you care so much about your privacy... Stop breaking the law? And then you won't have to worry?

I don't understand why anyone would care. That's my question, and you refuse to answer it.
Like everyone else does when I discuss this issue.

It's irrational to care about your privacy. Paranoid. Delusional.

Unless you did something bad, of course. But there's a quick solution to that: Don't do bad things.

Until I break a law, I will never care about my privacy.
I will never break a law. I will never care about my privacy.

But even that first line is a little disingenuous. I'd like to think that if I broke a law, I'd fess up. I'd own up to it.
"Privacy" is just a pacifier, that's all. A comfort blanket. I've grown out of comfort blankets.

K then Verb, share everything with the world. All your most intimate details, your secrets, your weaknesses, your strengths, everything. You shouldn't care about privacy after all, and it's why you totally didn't cry to the mods when I used your face for my avatar, right? Claiming it to be violation of your privacy? Oh right, you shouldn't care so nevermind.

Hypocrite.

The best argument for privacy is just an argument from reflexivity--"I care about my privacy, because I care about my privacy."

I guess I can't argue with that! But when I ask people WHY they care, they just have a childish meltdown.
They can't answer it.

Could it be, perhaps, that there's no logical/rational reason at all? And you're just a scared child?

Which falls under the "privacy" envelope you retard, not my problem if you find it offensive. Offensive things aren't against the law. Maybe if you'd grow a sack and take things like a man would, you wouldn't be such a baby about everything.

Except it does, tard. If you didn't think it was a thing that shouldn't be used it wouldn't be a privacy issue.

Also, lol nope, not using it to harass. My avatar is simply an artistic expression I envisioned one night and I sought to inspire the hearts of children everywhere upon its creation. There's nothing harassing about it.

harassment is also "a thing that shouldn't be used"
so i guess that means it's a privacy issue as well

It completely answers the question. Humans are private and seek privacy. I don't want some perverts staring at me and my girl when she's giving me a blowjob, would you? (Sorry, you actually don't know what it's like to touch a girl lol)

>Hurrrr unless you're a criminal you have nothing to worry about

You keep regurgitating the same bullshit without giving any thought. It's bad for your every intimate detail to be known by others, especially people who may hurt you. Information is power, and if someone has all the information on you, you're in a substantially weaker position.

If you're so fine with having no privacy, post your darkest secrets. Your worst feelings, your weaknesses, your failures, your shortcomings in every sort of way. Stream yourself when you jack off for the world to see. After all, you don't need privacy. Let the world watch you shit, eat, sleep, wake, piss, fail at life.

Release your medical records and your medical history. Give up your social security number. You don't need it, you don't need privacy.

If you don't do any of the above, you're a blaring hypocrite and a coward going against your own word.

Really the only reason that I care about my privacy is the social implications of certain things I may browse or look at online. It's not illegal but it will have a negative effect on how society might view me. There is always a chance that I could be wrong, however I choose not to share that and take a chance.
On the other hand I do agree that if everyone was 100% honest with how they lived and presented themselves as, we wold have no need for this discussion.

I wouldn't care if someone wanted to watch me getting a blowjob. That instance is different, though, because I'd also need the okay from whoever's blowing me, as well. But when it comes to solo activities, no, I could have an entire audience of people watching me for my entire life, and I would not give a single fuck.

If someone actually wants to hurt me for whatever reason, that's their issue. That's an issue with mental health. Because you'd have to be fucking mental to actually want to hurt me for anything I have personally done in my life.

I already have. I have no secrets. All of the people I hold dear, all the people in close intimacy with me, and every one of my trusted friends knows practically everything there is to know about me. I wouldn't know where to start with you, because I don't know what a "dark" secret is. I've never really done anything that interesting, either. And even then, there's no proof that I have/have not done any of these things, either, so it seems pretty fruitless, but if you really want me to list things about my life to you, I will.
Quote

Just because I don't care about my privacy doesn't mean I'm gonna go out of my way to reveal my personal life at every single opportunity. NONE. ZERO.
