Can nothing ever truly exist? On a scientific level this is a gray area. Between atomic particles themselves there is "empty space", but photons are also constantly going in between the particles. This can either be a philosophical or scientific debate.

"Nothing" can't "Exist," that's an oxymoron. The question answers itself, doesn't it?

Empty space is still a "Thing" in the sense that it has properties.

I always figured that absolute nothing can't feasibly exist since, well, we're kinda here along with the universe. Unless all of that magically counts as nothing for some asinine reason.

Absolute nothing is just that. Nothing. The presence of our universe sort of ruins that. And, if we get more complex and say that it works like bubbles, than even still, in order to travel into absolute nothing, we'd have to come from something and somewhere.

So, no. I don't think true nothingness exists. Because if it did, it would have to be all encompassing.

OT:

Nothingness exists only as an abstract concept. Yet, it's a physical state of non-being that we should all strive for, and an ether from which we should never have been pulled in the first place.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
I'm bretty sure that the scientific consensus is clear. Nothing isn't a thing. It's like cold. Cold's not a thing, it's just heat not being there.

I wouldn't even call it an abstract problem. Maybe in a overly-philosophical sense, sure, but it's really just a self-induced ontological tongue-twister. 'Nothing', as a descriptor of the contents of some space or set, is quantifiable and measurable, but it isn't a physical thing.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
It's impossible to get nothing...although Black Holes probably come close (although even then, they have gravity soooo...)

I don't really understand what you mean by this, black holes have a lot of mystery surrounding them but they're very much so "Things," they don't come close to "Nothing" at all.

I've seen a lot of philosophical discussion about the existential nature of nothingness, or our minds' inability to rationalize an absence of being, etc. I wasn't directing that at you.

I wouldn't say 'nothing' exists like the color red exists; 'nothing' is a physical property of a space or set. I think a lot of people want to find some "thing" to ascribe 'nothing' to, like we do we dark matter for example. It's very overthought in most philosophical discussions.

Some properties of particles should make us reconsider what we think of when we think "existence" anyways. Particles flickering in and out of observable reality, etc.

I meant "close as" to true nothing in the sense is they're in the vacuum of space and have no light either.

Of course they are something, they have an astounding gravitational force. But that's my point, true nothingness is impossible. If you were able to have a thick lead box containing a vacuum, truly devoid of any particles at all there would still be the forces of gravity acting within, and that can't be removed or blocked off.

Ah, shit. Tired me forgot about that. Disregard the Blackhole part.

Hmm...
Well I mean, if you think about it like programming, there's more than one kind of nothing.

There's zero, which is a number most of the time means nothing, but it still has a value. And then there's NULL, which is literally nothing (a null value) and really can't be added/multiplied.

In terms of outer space: empty space still has properties even if it has no mass. So as for real world examples, I'd say that if you could get something without space or time, you may be able to say you have nothing. But idk.

Well, that's just playing semantic word games. Our language isn't really suited for this discussion, but nonetheless, I think you know what he meant.

I mean, a lot of aspects of this topic boil down to semantics, and one person's definition of "Something" might not really conform to that of somebody else. Like, I'm sure the average person would classify empty space as "Nothing," despite, in the quantum sense, it certainly isn't. If it can be described, then it has some form of properties, and therefore I consider it "Something."

To me, the question isn't really one that makes any sense. Even if you get a blank canvas with no fields of gravitation, electromagnetism, the strong or weak force, or anything to "Excite" (In the quantum sense), it's still... A blank canvas that can be described. It just doesn't make any sense to ask if "Nothing" exists, because then it doesn't exist.

I hate sounding like a nitpicky douche, but this discussion sort of demands it.

Hell I don't even think I'm wording this correctly. It's such a weird thing to talk about.

You can have an absence of matter, sure. But even the space between quarks is still full of nuclear energy binding matter together. And, as far as we know, gravitational forces have an infinite range, so there is no area that is devoid of absolutely any kind of fundamental force.

Does this question even make sense? I get the feeling that just by asking the question you've already put limits on nothing's existence and in a way defined it as something, or something contradictory.
