Standing is a form of respect.
What's there to respect if they aren't saying the Pledge?

Their teachers, their school, their state, their country, their military?
The military?

I have great respect for our troops. Yes.
I'm not sure what that has to do with what we're talking about here.

You have no free speech when you are in school.
Yes, you do as said in Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District

Quote
"You suck Mr. Smith"
"1 weeks detention."
"You can't do that its my first amendment right!"
"Too bad, see you after school"
And saying "you suck Mr. Smith" in the middle of class is disruptive behavior

In the school context, the United States Supreme Court has identified three major relevant considerations:

- The extent to which the student speech in question poses a substantial threat of disruption (Tinker v. Des Moines Indep. Cmty. Sch. Dist.).

- Whether the speech is offensive to prevailing community standards (Bethel School District v. Fraser).

- Whether the speech, if allowed as part of a school activity or function, would be contrary to the basic educational mission of the school (Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier).

Standing is a form of respect.
It's impossible to force a person to have respect for something. All you're doing is forcing people into feigning respect while simultaneously turning them away from whatever it is you're trying to get them to praise. Respect is earned, not demanded or imposed. If you want people to respect your military or country or whatever it is you feel is so important, the only way to do it is by actually making it worthwhile of respect. Something that right now, it very much arguably is not.
I disagree.
And the impeccable logic behind how forcing kids to stand up and mindlessly repeat a bunch words at the risk of otherwise being punished suddenly makes them full of respect of something is...? All you're doing is antagonizing people.

"How dare you not think living in America is the greatest thing ever? Let's punish you repeatedly so that all your doubts and bad feelings will magically transform into respect!" A student like that is like a dog. If a dog is afraid of people, you don't change that by beating him until he suddenly changes his mind and goes "actually, people are pretty great. I mean, being punished and treated like shit by them has definitely made me see them in a different light and respect what they stand for."

How is this not obvious?

Where did I say you have to say it?

Just stand and stop acting like an edgy teenager.

And that teacher will loose their job. 1st Amendment violation. Rights even apply to students

Just enforcing the school policy.

I still don't understand why atheists can't just stand for 50 seconds and not say it. Just stand, thats it. But then again 90% of atheists are miserable assholes so....
1st Amendment>>>>>>school policy

Why can't atheists just express their 1st amendment right and not stand?

Why can't they just stand and not say anything?

Kids in other countries would literally kill to be in the same seat as them, in America.
and the kids who don't want to stand would literally kill to be in the same seat as me, in Europe where bullshit rules aren't applied.

Religion in science class, or school!? Holy shit, you guys sure do live in the dark ages.

Okay, replace "saying a bunch of words" with "standing up". My point still stands just the same. You are not making anyone have more respect for you, your institution or your ideals by forcing them to do something. If anything, you're making them have even less respect for you because instead of convincing them of the importance of it all and why exactly it is you deserve their respect, you're just punishing them until they do what you want. It simply doesn't work.

Part of school is to TEACH respect.

You're a grown man arguing with people 10-20 years younger than you are. Who is the child now? And I take it that you don't have anything better to do than post on some obscure off-site?

Lol here it comes. "You have nothing better to do".

You're right. I'm sitting on my ass and watching football with my son after a long hard week of work. Something I'm sure you know nothing about. I really have nothing better to do. Dishes done, grass cut, all chores done.

I hope no one here is 10-20 years younger than me. That would be disturbing.

Just counting down the days until MCC.
