It's a Japanese turn based strategy game with an anime art style where you can marry units together to have children to create a second generation of protagonists.

Serious question to anyone that knows about this issue: why would this be in the game? The rest is mostly harmless JRPG sexbait but the sister thing isn't just a glitch or something, they actually wrote suggestive dialog.

If that's from the Conquest half, the protagonist is adopted. As far as I'm aware, you can't have a relationship with any of the protagonist's blood-relatives.

I'd mostly attribute it to Japan's cultural acceptance of inter-family marriage (not brother-sister, but second cousins is okay) and bluntly-worded language. It's pretty easy to mistranslate without proper context; never-the-less, it's a pretty awkward line. If the mini-game hadn't been removed, I would assume that they would have completely changed the line in localization.

God--it creeps me out just knowing all those Japanese games I've played with heavy dialogue, and how much sexual innuendo they've probably stuffed into it all, and I never noticed after all this time. Abhorrent.

So why do you care? If some game developer chooses to make their game this way, who are the prude Nintenbabies to say that the audience that has been foaming at the mouth for this release can't have it because they're not mature enough for it?

You want to know why this logic fails? It's because Japanese developers don't create shit to appeal to the most amount of consumers possible. Developers create shit THEY like and if it gains a following, they create content for their fans, not people who sit on the fence on whether or not they might enjoy it, because that disenfranchises the people who matter: their original fans. The mass appeal style approach fails in the long run (look at Halo 5 as a perfect example of trying to appeal to more people), it has an inverse effect.

We're talking about a culture that only cares about only it's fans so much, when they release a movie they just take a plain box and slap the title of the movie on it and stick in stores expecting it to sell. And it does. They're not going to waste time on trying to appeal to the masses, because they know their committed fans come first and they'll already buy the movie/game/book over someone who goes "well.....I need more information on it....."

And it's showing with Nintendo of America. They have been demonized to Hell and back for this, Nintendo is trying to use it's garbage western approach on a product that wasn't designed for that kind of advertising. Do you the developers who made Fates cares what you have to say on the subject of their work? They only care about the people who want to buy the game, and their mindset (the correct mindset) is conflicting with NoA and it's showing with the current reception Fates has before it's even released. Nintendo is shooting itself in the foot, and this is all ignoring the very simple truth that censorship regardless of intent or reason, is just plain bad.

Whatever faint interest I once had in exploring the Fire Emblem series has violently evaporated upon realizing where the franchise is currently headed--especially with regards to how it treats its female characters.

Once you start selling it to people, you have to set a standard. You have to, if you want to survive as a company.

You must not be very familiar with the highly specific market that's being targeted by the FE games, the otaku market. The thing that makes Japanese Otakus distinct is that they are very obsessive and very particular about their tastes; characters have to look and act in specific cliche ways, things have to be both adorable and erotic, the humor has to be within certain constraints, gameplay can be highly detailed of effectively optional. Franchises need otakus to be obsessed in some way about their characters, because that keeps them buying their merchandise and not drifting off to some other obsession inducing franchise.

Take for example Kantai Collection, a piece of shit facebook style game that's been hugely popular for a few years now. Why is it successful? Because cute anime girls with cute voice actors who have destructible clothing and military historical references are on display for you to collect like pokemon; The entire franchise (books, audio cds, figures, cosplay, anime, manga, doujinshi)  is built around showcasing cute girls, and that's characteristic of the otaku market; Entire franchises can be built around showcasing characters that appeal to otaku tendencies.

As it currently stands, being successful in the Japanese market means appealing to otakus in novel ways; if you can't keep them hooked then they have plenty of other franchises that will cater to their highly specifics whims:

So to summarize, not only is this kind of waifu pandering necessary to succeed in Japan, it's inevitable for any franchise that appeals to otakus.

Oh yeah Gaara raised a point that I forgot to mention, the developers themselves like being pervs. You don't go into video games if you don't like them, and you don't go into the Japanese game industry if you haven't been an otaku yourself for several years.
