Quote
The former Google employee who was fired after posting a missive criticizing the company's diversity efforts calls his dismissal illegal and says he is "exploring all possible legal remedies."
James Damore said via email on Monday night that he was told he was fired for "'perpetuating gender stereotypes.'"
Damore, a senior software engineer who had worked at Google since December 2013, posted the 10-page note on an internal Google discussion board late last week, criticizing what he called Google's liberal leanings and its training around "unconscious bias," particularly with regard to women. The document cited purported principles of evolutionary psychology to argue that women are unsuited to be good engineers because they are more interested in people than ideas.
On his LinkedIn profile, Damore lists a “PhD, Systems Biology” from Harvard in 2013. However, a representative from Harvard tells WIRED that Damore did not complete a PhD. He completed a master’s degree in systems biology in 2013.
The “Google memo,” as it became known on Twitter, went viral over the weekend, generating fierce criticism from other Google employees and many others outside the company.
Google executives initially appeared to be caught off guard by the document and the uproar. Danielle Brown, the company's new vice president of diversity and inclusion, posted a response late Saturday that both criticized some of the statements in Damore's missive and said Google sought an "open, inclusive environment" that accommodates multiple political views.
On Monday, however, Google CEO Sundar Pichai sent a company-wide email saying that Damore had violated the company's Code of Conduct by "advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace." News of Pichai's email surfaced just moments before word that Damore had been fired.
In the email exchange with WIRED on Monday night, Damore said he wrote the document "to express my concerns about the terms and conditions of my working environment, and to bring up potentially illegal behavior." He said he had filed a complaint, formally known as a charge, with the National Labor Relations Board. He also claimed that California law prohibits firing or coercing workers for their political views. Damore did not respond to a request for an interview.

In case you haven't heard of this, Google (more like Skynet) decided to fire an engineer for wrongthink, Julian Assange offered him a job, and he's likely going to sue Google. If you needed one more reason to dislike Google, then here it is.

An employee publicly defames his employer and is fired. Explain the problem like I'm five, because I'm not seeing it.

Edit: so was the memo private? Because then I see the problem.

He posted a report he made to the Google private message boards where he just goes on about typical evopsych stuff regarding how men and women tend to lean towards different professions due to biology and such. That was about it from what I've gathered. I hardly see how it would count as defaming his employer.

Edit: Here's a link to the report itself. It seems innocuous.

dracula can eat my whole ass!
Even if it's true that women have certain psychological leanings that make them inferior engineers (I think that's dubious at best), it's still wrong to discriminate on that basis, and the more we encourage women to take different roles, the more likely these leanings will be bred out over the next several generations.

Not entirely the point of the OP but whatever.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
That'll be an interesting case to watch if it gets picked up. I don't really see anything outrageous  or scandalous in the memo and his points are presented quite professionally.

He's right and wrong. Employers should look to those who have disruptive thoughts. We are in the age of disruption. But, the oversimplifications made about women are disingenuous at best.

But whatever.

He posted it to the whole company.

The. Whole. Company.

Of course he got fired.

It's kind of hard to take this comment seriously when they plan on rolling out new "features" on Youtube that will essentially shutdown political content creators if they're holding an opinion they don't like.

If you know, you know.
Unfair dismissal.
Hope he sues the big G and gets a lot of cash.

Ideas or words is not violence. He presented what he thinks - and people should have just said, I disagree, lets have a debate on this so maybe as a corporation we can learn something and develop together and be better.

NOPE. Get the pitch-forks lads, for I am triggered. Him getting fired is absolutely unfair. He did not promote violence or discrimination. He just wanted to explain why he thinks there is a gap.

You know how sometimes you said something to your teacher and they just smirk and roll their eyes but when you ask them to explain why they are rolling their eyes, they just laugh. Wouldn't it be much better that the teacher would explain your mistakes - after all, you are there to learn. Even your workplace is still a place of learning.

They should have debated him or discusses this and live-stream it company wide.

One of the articles you linked says "In a society where women control their community’s wealth, they’re more competitive then men." I assume the opposite is true also. So there you have it, women used to be housewives for a while and change is happening but it is gradual. They are slowly becoming competitive.

If he said this ten-17 years ago would he have gotten fired over it? To me the reason why is due to this "social justice warrior" mentality we have now. It's a different subject to talk about, but I'm going to bring up Gone Home. If that game came out ten years earlier as well than it most likely would have been considered mediocre, which it is and it wouldn't have been getting the praise it's getting now. As a society we are now getting butthurt over the littlest of things and we are praising things or people like Bruce Jenner simply because they involve the LGBT. There is nothing heroic about what Bruce Jenner did to his body, but people are considering him "heroic" all because he got a sex change.

I never got this with 'pride parades'. If you are born this way, what exactly are you proud of? Now if you live like this by choice then you can be proud of it, because you chose to do so.

Like I cannot be proud to have two testicle. I was born with them.

Being patriotic is a choice. I'm not sure what you are trying to say.
Do you mean how someone is proud of the country they are born in? Or proud to have been born in their country?

i can be proud of luxembourg for affording people the right to die, but i cannot be their patriot

i take it you wouldn't say it's rational to be a patriot then

You have to be proud of your country to be a patriot of it. You also have to push your country to be better if you are a real patriot.

i'm failing to see why this means you can't or shouldn't be proud of your sexuality

you don't choose your sexuality, sure, but you don't choose where you're born either

there are lots of things we're "proud" of that we don't necessarily choose, so it just seems like you're trying to apply an arbitrary standard where there doesn't necessarily need to be one
