Global poverty is not rising, it's falling. Cheers capitalism.

That's only because the manufacturing industry up and outsourced to third world shitholes like China and India. And even though their economies are growing and all, the standard of living for most people in these countries is easily comparable to many African nations.

Is it the free trade? Or are the consequences of Europe's imperialism finally wearing off?

lolwat

Post-colonial growth in Africa would suggest the legacy of European imperialism doesn't have a particularly long arm. Although there's probably some institutional hangovers from that time period, to suggest that declining global poverty is being caused by the end of the influence of colonialism isn't particularly well-informed.

Not that there aren't still associated issues with colonialism; the elite in Colombia is largely descended by white Europeans, and they do indeed suppress the nonwhite majority.

I think it's funny how you have Pablo Escobar as your avatar and yet you're here praising governments and acting as if poverty is practically a thing of a long forgotten past.

Yes. There may be less people literally starving to death. But the majority of people in Africa don't have access to electricity. And even in America, there are still a shit ton of people that are poor.

That man in your picture is a direct result of this system we live in. A system that keeps our heads just above water in 1st world countries and has people dying in infancy in most other countries.

But you don't care, and none of you here have experienced that desperation so you just read a few articles on your computer in your house telling you everything is going to be ok and you believe it.

I always liked to think of it as walking a tightrope over treading water.

Our wonderful system both trying to balance itself and hope that the rope doesn't snap anytime soon.

Socialism isn't about people being equal, it's about equal people sharing. At least that's my understanding of it. Poor people won't be among the people who share, because they're too low to be included. Capitalism is about rich people using poorer people to gain profit, and thus everyone is included in the system.

In socialism the poor are outside the circle, and thus the help they receive are basically donations.

Fuck it, I'll summarize it anyway.

Socialistic societies like Sweden like to share, and they think that they should use the word "equal" to explain themselves, and it's a good word to explain the inhabitants, but the poor are excluded. Everyone is equal within the society, not outside of it. "but we accept poor people" yes, few of them. The few immigrants that they allow into their country are kickstarted into a life of comfort. They get a house, and an education. It's important for them to be equal.

But if everyone were truly equal, most people would be allowed in, and it'd be impossible to choose who gets to stay and who doesn't.

With capitalism, it's much more simply, yet more intricate. Instead of one big power, and one big system(society), there are lots of them, all with different systems that look similar; big companies that thrive on the work of the poor to supply the middle class. Everyone is included regardless of their situation, because poor people are good workers for the companies.

Everyone is happy in capitalism, but socialism isn't working is what the OP says,  and according to my "explanation" those statements are true, but what I want to point out is that poor people are still poor, even though they have a job and an income.

Sweden isn't even mildly socialist; nor is the welfare state particularly impressive: it doesn't redistribute any more than Britain.
But if everyone were truly equal, most people would be allowed in, and it'd be impossible to choose who gets to stay and who doesn't.
