She's 23, married, just an average person, but out of nowhere found a lump on her throat and found out (after weeks of testing) that she has lymphoma. The cancer is in her bone marrow, meaning it's treatable but she can never be cured. Survival rate is about 60% for 10 years. In all likelihood she'll be dead before she's 35. If she ever has kids they'll grow up mostly without a mom, and that's assuming chemo doesn't sterilize her (which it almost always does).

Not sure what to talk about. I had a friend get killed by a drunk driver somewhat recently, and now a good friend is basically succumbing slowly to a deadly disease. Share your experiences like this, good or bad.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
I'll be honest, times like these, I realize that the one upside to not having any friends is that I don't have to see any of them die... and that actually feels bad.

My cousin, who I'm close with, was diagnosed with the same cancer June 2013. Except it was stage 3. Was hard but he made a full recovery. Just gotta stay positive. God has a plan.

God has a plan.

Sure does. It's just hard to understand why it is what it is sometimes.

Not to derail the thread or anything, unless you want the discussion to divert this way, but what exactly could a plan that has someone undergo a malignant, incurable tumour be at all beneficial to a human being?

Why exactly would an all benevolent god put a sentient creature, particularly something as emotionally prone as we are, through an ordeal like that?

To get us through to Heaven? Okay, why doesn't he encourage us all to kill ourselves then?

A girl I was friends with in high school just found out she has stage 3 Hodgkins lymphoma and she's only 19. My cousin crushed his spine about a year and a half ago, when he was 19, and is now a quadriplegic. I have another cousin that was shot to death last year and her sister's husband died in a tractor accident later that year.

I won't proselytize on this site, but the tl;dr of theology on the subject of suffering is that humanity reaps what it sows through sin, the punishment of which is death, in the form of disease, aging, war, etc. God's plan is a corrective action over many generations to fix this issue while keeping in line with our ability to make choices in our lives (AKA free will, which is a whole other topic).

I don't intend to discuss this in-depth here.

So, really, nothing that can't be solved by killing ourselves, essentially.

I'm not sure what you want me to say. You know that's not what I'm saying, or the position any Judeo-Christian religion takes (save Islam via martyrdom), so you're purposefully derailing the thread out of derision.

For further questions, refer to Google or your nearest bible.

Just seems like an awfully complex way for the human race to allegedly advance when you can essentially just cut out the middle man.

I suppose I can't really understand why any of this can strike a cord with anyone, especially with someone as scientifically literate as yourself. But I guess you're entitled to withhold these views.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.

If I understand, it's more taking your punishments in step. Losing your friends in such ways may further put life into perspective in terms of what you need to do to live more godly as an individual and as a community.

To use Turkey's (unfortunate) predicament as an example, his friend isn't the one being punished; it's those around her who haven't done God's will accordingly. It's basically a form of plague.

Seems like an awfully subtle and pernicious way to put your life into 'perspective.'

Not to mention, not all people view it like that. People can take loss in various different, sometimes even tragic ways. I just don't see how a supposed all loving god could do something as abhorrent like that just to 'advance' a person.

Sounds like a utilitarian prick to me.

My grandma went through lukemia. My father's sister is going through bone cancer. I've known a few decent people, I guess you could say neighbors, who've had various forms. A couple kids from my school. Myself.

It's a scary thing, you know. You don't expect it. Not to happen to anybody you know. And then, poof. There it is. There can't really be anything said about it to help, really. But, remember this. She's probably going to have a short life expectancy, as you said.

That's going to take her down dark roads. If she's your friend, keep her going. Pull her back up to her feet even if she can't and doesn't want to. People in those situations, depending on who they are, need a hand.

Don't let her down as a friend. She's gonna need people.

God isn't just loving, he's also wrathful. His punishments are intended to set upon those to learn the righteous path, and there are countless examples throughout both the Old and New Testament in which he practically tortures his people through his insistence that they follow His creed. But He isn't jut throwing hissy-fits when He doesn't get his way; they're punishments he inflicts due to the victims not following his rules.

I always imagined it like a pattlin', except with more death. Keep in mind I may be completely wrong about this, I'm just speaking from my own knowledge and perspective on Christianity. And unless you're speaking with a Catholic from the 16th century, chances are any Christian you speak with about it will have a different view. One of the Ninety-Five Theses and all that mumbo.
