Are we really free to protest?

Even a peaceful protest, the cops show up and tell everyone to go home.

What's the point in having the right to protest when you get told to go home, anyway?

The best outcome is that everyone disperses. It's not uncommon for peaceful protesters to be arrested or pepper-sprayed when they don't disperse.

Where's the freedom?

Well, yeah, but I mean in practice. They tell us we're allowed to, but shut it down when we do.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
The problem with peaceful protestors is that they tend to pick dumb locations that inconvenience others. They shouldn't be able to do that.

We're not. It's truly ridiculous. The right to protest is the direct extension of freedom of speech, the basis of any civilized society.

The whole point of protests is to allow the people to express problems by peaceful gatherings to bring up an issue into evidence. However, such gatherings of people can also prove a serious threat for the security of the people involved themselves. The idea is that you have police monitor the situation, and in case something goes out of hand and a protest turns into a riot is quenched.

Where the serious issue is on who, and why uses a protest as a political tool. For example; in Greece it is well-known that certain people involved in causing the riots have close ties with certain parties to induce violence from an otherwise peaceful protest. Perhaps, since inciting a riot from a protest isn't a terribly hard thing to do. (Especially when the issue is a grave one)

On whether actual protesting should be allowed to the general populace is because the basis of a democracy consists on expression your own opinions, and concerns. Unlike an autocracy, or other systems that do view such an expression as a threat (since the decision-making and awareness rests on the ruler(s)) a driving factor behind a democracy stems from the ability of people being able to express themselves.

That's also why it's also frowned upon when a peaceful protest is reprimanded by various police forces. Who later may proceed to do some damage control at various lengths with different degrees of success.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
Depends on what.

I mean you can protest about immigration in a serious manner (ala UKIP), but as soon as you go more extreme and start to incite racism and hate speech, you're infringing on another's rights (ala EDL or skinheads), and so you can't.

...or you could do the retarded thing like break local shops and loot them and just be an inconvenience/arsehole.

There's also the effectiveness of said protest. Even if you protested in a relatively polite and progressive manner, you can just be ignored and the system can carry on regardless of what you think (unless you get some maaaajor backing, and I mean on the scale of millions/hundred-millions).

We can't protest. Because Ferguson rioters were responsible for it's destruction of its town.

Well protesting on a highway is just going to cause problems. When you are causing a major traffic jam you're going to have cops called in to break it up.

I've been to a protest before, wasn't shut down. Though I did get detention for leaving school despite the principal announcing we could leave for the protest without repercussions outside of having to make up what we missed in class.
