Um, no amount of preparations and evacuations can prevent house floodings and other property damage.

Sandbags
Yeah um no.

Yeah, and that's one scenario. Your statement is too generalized.

"No amount of preparations can prevent house floodings and other property damage".

That simply isn't true.
I don't think you understand the gravity of the situation.

I don't think you get what I'm saying. I'm saying you generalized and that it was false. The flooding of houses can be prevented in some cases. You said it couldn't.

In Hurricane Sandy's case, most of the flooding couldn't be prevented.
I did not generalize whatsoever, considering I lived through it. You're downplaying the severity of a hurricane.

Property damage is not the exception, it is the rule.

I've lived through hurricanes too.

Generalizing ^

And this thread isn't about Hurricane Sandy, it's about FEMA and disaster relief funding.
As I said before, in some cases house flooding cannot be prevented. Like in Sandy's case.

But I'm not just talking about Hurricane Sandy, which you keep posting images and videos of.  I'm talking about in general. Is all house flooding preventable? No, but some of it is.

Spoiler
I am not generalizing.

Hurricane Sandy is a disaster and is thus directly related to FEMA funding. Sandbags won't do shit to prevent roof damage, which is extremely likely during a hurricane. Losing FEMA funds is not a sustainable course of action for any governor whatsoever.

Alright, if denying FEMA funding to them isn't the answer, what is?
Order schools to educate their students about climate change.
Encourage rival media outlets to go after conservative sources that try to deny or downplay climate change.

Basically do whatever we can to educate the remaining climate change skeptics so these idiots stop getting elected.

Do you really think they're just going to change their stance over this?

If anything it will just lead to greater polarization.

The solution is education, not punishment for thoughtcrime.
It is a political move that just so happens to be a dangerous one, too.
AND DENYING PREPAREDNESS FUNDS BECAUSE SOME DUMBFUCK DOESN'T BELIEVE IN CLIMATE CHANGE ALSO HAPPENS TO BE A DANGEROUS FUCKING POLITICAL MOVE.

As I've already shown with evidence, the governors are already harming their own states with their climate denial and failing to properly prepare their own states. The available evidence has already shown that even when offered FEMA assistance, the governors in question won't use it effectively anyway.

But as soon as the fed threatens take away something, everyone just loses their minds.

The feds are exacerbating the situation.  This sets a dangerous precedent for things moving forward.

Just because there's an idiot behind the wheel not wearing a seatbelt doesn't mean that the passenger airbags shouldn't go off.

Exacerbating? As I've already said on this page, the governors were not effectively preparing their states. Taking away one part of FEMA funding isn't even going to make a difference, because having it barely made a difference in the first place.

It's more like taking airbags from a car because the driver disabled them. Having them or not having them--it's not going to matter either way.

But I hate analogies, I don't know why we're even attempting them >.>

That's what's happening, but it's moving at a snail's pace. As in the case of Texas, climate change deniers have tried to change the curriculum to cast doubt on the veracity of climate change. A similar situation happened in West Virginia. There's very little indication that climate deniers have plans to stop anytime soon. Even universities are pandering to climate deniers. The biggest major news network in the country constantly touts the climate denial perspective. A current member and former chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works receives money from BP. Climate deniers actively attempt to discredit their opponents. (And that's just one example.) Good luck finding a GOP candidate who hasn't tried to cast doubt on climate change.

Climate denial is deeply ingrained in our society, and there's no sign of it going away. Worst case, trying to discredit them will just encourage them to play the victim card, and it'll work just like it always has. There's a strong wave of anti-intellectualism at play here. And a lot of it's not even about 'ignorance,' but about pushing an agenda because there's money in doing so. It's clear that no amount of disasters such as hurricanes will change their minds. How much longer will we wait to do something about it?

What about ordering schools on a federal level and making climate change questions a part of Common Core?

This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.
BUT COMMON CORE IS PART OF THE LIBERAL AGENDA
Are you going to withholding the funding for schools if they don't adhere to common core?

I don't know what the policy is on that. I know there's a lot of push back on the state level about it. I don't know what the options are for accepting/rejecting Common Core.

Honestly, that sounds ideal (especially to this FEMA stuff), but it's already been pointed out that conservatives think the Common Core is some liberal agenda to indoctrinate our children. And who knows how they'll somehow turn it in their favor?

shit sucks  ::)

by "a bit heavy handed", I mean "lolno this is an incredibly bad move". Giving deniers an excuse to go "see they don't care about the truth or safety" or something along those lines is extremely fucking dumb

so I'm just gonna bow out of le thread ^______^
Why did you come here if you had nothing substantial to contribute?

As a person that lives in one of the states that would be effected this just isn't really fair. I didn't fucking vote for Mary Fallin but yet according to the people in this thread I still "get what I deserve" when an F5 tornado comes barreling through and destroys my whole town and I get no disaster relief. Yes great logic you got there. If you honestly believe in punishing a whole population and putting human lives in immediate danger for a few people's beliefs then you should rightly fucking off yourself.
Relief is not going to be withheld.

But even with preventative FEMA funds, Oklahoma is still one of the least prepared states in the entire country. Complain to Fallin before you complain to FEMA.

Once again I did not vote for Fallin and still I know a lot of that preparedness funding goes to building storm shelters which save a lot of lives. So if you want to have that high of a disregard for human life and say that a population, many of which did not even vote for these people to be in power, deserve to get none of those life saving funds then you may as well fuck off you belligerent little cunt. You fucking liberals like to sit high and mighty and act like your better than everyone but you may as well be the scum of the fucking earth if you wish death upon people based on ideology.
I'm sorry if I don't want disproportionate amounts of FEMA funds going to your state and away from mine because your dipshit governor can't spend it properly.

This is Fallin's doing. She brought it upon herself. Seeing as flattened neighborhoods aren't doing the trick, maybe money's going to be the magic wake-up call.
