I'm almost expecting him to just "break character" once he gets elected to show that the majority of the voting base are retarded.

Not that I've read up on his actual policies at all, but if it's along the lines of the ones I hear often ("Fuck muslims, build walls"), I can hardly believe he's serious about it, nor that that many people could support it.
I really don't see how building a wall is something you couldn't be serious about.
It's geographically impossible to do what Trump wants to do, given how the land is around the border in a lot of places. And the money it would take to build and maintain this 21st century Great Wall.
That's what civil engineers exist for. Also, Trump, not enough money. For real?
No I meant his business partners pulling out of his company and all that. Ending advertisement deals and other various things. I heard that that happened across numerous places in the Middle East or something after he said the Muslim thing.

I've yet to hear any fair critiques of him as they tend to be the typical smear "he's a racist bigot that wants to throw all Mexican babies over the border to get eaten by dingoes" kind of thing.

From what I recall reading of his policies nothing sounds terrible.
But

He is coming off as a racist bigot and literally said he wants to deport millions and allow no Muslims in. It doesn't get any more clear than that. It's like defending Ford's policies when he wouldn't shut the hell up about the Jews (I learned a lot about him lately. What an asshole).

The only policy I've really heard from Trump so far is the tax plan and people had a field day tearing that apart. Though he's probably the only Republican there who actually has a plan. The rest just say "Repeal Obamacare" and "Aggressive new plan".

To say, 'nothing is true', is to realize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say, 'everything is permitted', is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic.

I have doubts that the amount of support those partners would be cutting from Trump would be enough to seriously hinder him.

And what is exactly wrong with saying they should be deported when they cannot be supported yet by the state? Not allowing Muslims in would, in effect, likely chalk up to not letting refugees/migrants in. Having certain unfavorable views on groups doesn't mean one cannot do a certain job well, assuming Trump is indeed racist. Ford was a bigot, but he still created one of the biggest auto companies and did a lot of good.

People tear every little detail of everything apart when you run for public office. Compared to the Democrats, there's no way his plan could be any worse or incomplete.

No, but the fact that Trump can't just snap his fingers and make funds for such a project appear out of thin air will.

Trump, Carson, and their supporters, all seem to think that an outsider is going to walk into the White House and be able to seemingly navigate the many layers of red tape and bureaucratic nonsense that covers everything in Washington DC, while working with a Congress that is at a record low in terms of meaningful legislation passed - and it won't help that almost all political analysts say that the Senate will win back (slightly) in the Democrat's favor after 2016.

Sure, Trump could pass an executive order stating his intents to build a wall, but the amount of money needed to research the plan, let alone begin construction, is going to be astronomical and take years before work actually begins. So much for being fiscally conservative.

Well I mean, good luck trying to deport 11 million people out of the country. How would you do it? Buses? Troops or police coming to get them out? Kasich even said it. Imagine what that would look like on TV, and imagine how many families would be separated. The US would alienate itself from the Western World and probably get sanctioned if it ever tried something like that. It'd be viewed as a huge human rights violation.

I honestly doubt Trump is a racist, but that doesn't excuse the things he's presenting. It's not all just about how well you can run the economy when you become a president. You're judged on a number of things, and in the modern age when human rights is as good as it has been in the history of mankind, it would not be acceptable. He can have a plan all he wants for taxes and companies, but it wouldn't negate the horrible things he'd do as well (even though we all know congress would never allow it).

As they should when you're the leader of arguably the most influential country in the world. A nation with huge power comes with huge responsibility. You're supposed to set an example to the free world, and it's something America has championed forever. Even if we're hypocrites about it.

And even if he had amazing plans, he doesn't have ANY money to pay for his plans. Whenever he's asked "how are you gonna pay for it?" he always just says "We'll get the money". It's not possible for anything he's proposing.

It would also make the United States the only nation that bars immigration or accepting refugees into the country based on one's religious affiliation.

Do you have any details on which places would make the wall impossible to build? Wouldn't difficult terrain act as a natural barrier reducing the amount of wall that needs to be built?.Also beyond construction I'm not seeing what would make it so expensive.

The terrain is different all across the border with elevation, cliffs, etc taken into account.

And if it's going to be a wall like Constantinople's golden gates, which is what Trump is saying, then the cost to build that across 1,954 miles, and maintain it, is nothing shy of fantasy and a massive waste of money that could be going someplace else.

But wouldn't cliffs make the wall more defensible? And even then I don't see why the wall would have to be more elaborate than anything Israel has, essentially a concrete fence.

Now I can think of 11 million problems that the American government could spend it's money on, but it would be completely useless without a wall, and the without a wall the problem isn't going to decrease either.

There's a difference in scale from building a concrete fence around the Gaza Strip to seperating the southern US from Mexico.

...about 1,917 miles difference.

(Not mentioning maintenance here either)

That's less than half the length of China's wall. I don't see how this wall is impossible compared to any other wall, or compared to any other American building project - You've already built and maintained Hoover dam so the engineering capabilities exist in America.

China's wall also took multiple dynasties to build and killed millions of people. It wasn't really worth it.

Comparing something so ancient to modern times where there is not a force invading you, is rather silly.

Hoover Dam is tiny compared to the wall being proposed, and the Great Wall of China is falling apart, trying to maintain what remains would be a massive challenge, only parts that are huge tourist attractions are even taken care of. I think only a third of the wall is even left.

It's possible to build a wall across the US/Mexican border, but I couldn't imagine the cost. To use the Great Wall of China as an example, the current Great Wall was built over a period of nearly 300 years, cost a ton of lives and is now in disuse and falling apart. What would be the point?

Just looked it up. Took over a thousand years. The one we know is from the 1300's - 1600's by the Ming Dynasty.

I really don't see how building a wall is something you couldn't be serious about.
It's geographically impossible to do what Trump wants to do, given how the land is around the border in a lot of places. And the money it would take to build and maintain this 21st century Great Wall.

Mongols still took over anyway.
I got the 300 years from how long it took to build the current wall as we know and think about today, even though the original wall is over 2000 years old
Oh

yeah that's still crazy, and the modern one was built during the Mongol raids and stuff, so yeah. It was pretty much worthless in the end.

China's wall also took multiple dynasties to build and killed millions of people. It wasn't really worth it.

Comparing something so ancient to modern times where there is not a force invading you, is rather silly.
Be that as it may it sets the precedent that a stupidly big wall isn't impossible. Now while I'm not a qualified engineer, construction technology and methods have improved tremendously since then, China didn't have trucks or modern chemistry and engineering knowledge; and I would assume America has safety standards.

And 11 million people have already, they're so successful at invading that they're having families at the same time.

But Hoover is more structurally complex than a wall. I should've made it clear, but if America is capable of building and maintaining a structure like that, then they have the technical capacity to build a wall. Of course the wall could still be economically impossible, I simply don't know enough.

I mean if Trump can't afford it then he's fucked.

Be that as it may with modern tech, what is the point? Building a wall shows you're scared more than anything. Rather than just shut everyone off, maybe we should look at how tedious our immigration process is, and how bad of a state the country below us is. It's a humanitarian crisis.

Actually, I don't think even most immigrants in now are Mexican. They're from other Latin American countries.

Remember how the Huns scaled the Great Wall?  Now imagine a million Mexicans.
