This is the way the world ends. Not with a bang but a whimper.

In economics, austerity describes policies used by governments to reduce budget deficits during adverse economic conditions. These policies may include spending cuts, tax increases, or a mixture of the two.
I can't say I'm an advocate, despite being a Conservative.

Austerity is more relevant in the U.K., but the States have also seen fiscal austerity since 2010-ish.

Wasn't austerity kind of terrible in Europe?

It was much worse due to the fact they've had no monetary stimulus, but yeah.

Austerity is the government equivalent of spanking a child that got hit by a car.

I'd have thought you would've supported austerity.

When it comes to spending cuts, sure.  Though that is usually coupled with tax hikes.

Ehhhhh

I'm no where near qualified to answer that, and I don't know enough about economics to really have an opinion either. I think it's not a terrible idea, but what the tories have done has been a mixed bag. I'd rather see them tighten up their belts rather than slash the motherloving shit out of 'the evil benefit scrounging public'. It doesn't take a professor to look at the actual statistics for spending to realise that it's just an easy scapegoat to stab rather than to cut out pointless shite like HS2.
