It's the phrase I use to describe the concern that the propositions you're making are obviously false, and yet for some reason you can't realise it. Or, in another form, the concern that other people's criticisms are valid and your responses inadequate, yet you just can't realise it.

I don't know if this is like, a 'thing'.

Hmm not really.

I tend to avoid subjects that I'd be out of my depth in, like Economics and the like. I'm confident enough with anything Psychological/Psychopathological to talk about it without worry that someone saying 'Psychology is a Pseudoscience' is actually right and I'm wasting my life.

If someone counters my point with some fancy research paper, I can't exactly argue that a proven fact is false. Then again as Psy said, if I haven't any knowledge on a subject or an interest, I'll stay out of it.

But after a few lectures recently I've been asked to question data, because it could be easily manipulated to show/prove something that isn't true, or appear to have a link when it doesn't.

Poor wording on my part, the two aren't in the same section.

When you are wrong and have been proven wrong, saying so/owning up etc can be embarrassing sure, but compared to what damage control results in, it's not as bad.

Damage control is where you double down, backtrack, misconstrue and generally make an arse of yourself even further than the original point you made. The easiest case in point would be a certain former user's flamewars where they would state something idiotic which is then taken to pieces, and proceed to deny, defend and flip out over their original point which is clearly and demonstrably wrong.

Saving face could apply to either accepting your mistake or successful damage control where it's not noted that you were doing it.
