The first bomb was definitely justified. Japan had no intention of surrendering any time soon. It was necessary deterrent of future conflict.

The second bomb is debatable. I've heard from some that Japan was planning to surrender after Hiroshima and didn't have time to do so before Nagasaki, but others insist they would have continued anyway.

The first bomb can be argued as justifiable, dropping a second one without giving them sufficient time to surrender just seems downright malicious. You unveil the most powerful weapon on the planet and atomise hundreds of thousands in an instant and expect that to not be the biggest paralyser for a country like that?

One bomb was enough.

The other problem about an invasion is Russia. The country would have been split into North and South Japan just like Korea, Vietnam and Berlin.
Yup. Two nuked cities left japan in a much better state than a first world/second world south/north split would have.
And there's no way a successful mainland invasion wouldn't have involved Russian aid after the way they devastated Japan's army groups in mainland Asia.
When the US captured those aircraft carrying subs the Japs built we sunk them because of the Russians. We didn't want them to get a look at them and they knew we had them. So we sunk them because of them. If we invaded Russia probably would have wanted to as well due to land. And like you said we would need Russian aid since the US estimated we would have took around one million casualties for that invasion.

At the very least drop a couple warning nukes of their coast.

America only had three up until then, and one of them was used in the Trinity Test. The Fat Man and Little Boy that they dropped were the only nukes they had left.

I think we need to take into account just how tired of war everybody was. Continuing a "traditional" attack on Japan would've taken a while.

And America had to show it was a force to be reckoned with in case Russia got any ideas.

What happened was a tragedy. But I really don't think there would've been a better way with less casualties.

This has nothing to do with the Japanese governement. I would've had no problem if we bombed two military bases instead of two urban centers. The civilians in Japan, while pretty brainwashed, sure, had nothing to do with the actual war.

I'm not saying they are, but Japan was given multiple warnings beforehand, and had no intention of ceasing their acts of aggression and war crimes. Their culture was literally predicated on the basis of placing victory before the lives of their citizens.

Everything's a target in total war, especially against a country whose civilians were willing to kill themselves en masse upon an Allied invasion. But Hiroshima was a military target; it was a large port and supply depot. It would be equivalent to bombing something like Norfolk in the U.S. As for Nagasaki, it was also a port, and 90% of its labor was devoted to the war effort.

Hiroshima was the headquarters of the Fifth Division and Field Marshal Shunroku Hata's 2nd General Army Headquarters, which commanded the defense of all of southern Japan. It was also a communications center, a storage point, an assembly area for troops, and a military-industrial center powered by the mass-scale forced labour of Koreans.  The Navy Elite Academy was on the near island of Edajima. Kure, less than 15 miles from Hiroshima city, was another major shipyard, where the famous Yamato was constructed with material and labor from Hiroshima

Nagasaki was one of the largest sea ports in southern Japan and had grand industrial importance. Ordnance, ships, military equipment, and other war materials were manufactured there. The Mitsubishi Steel and Arms Works was located there. Mitsubishi produced over 10,000 Zero fighters and the battleship Musashi.

I mean, you can literally find this information with a two second google search.
During World War II, the 2nd General Army and Chugoku Regional Army were headquartered in Hiroshima, and the Army Marine Headquarters was located at Ujina port. The city also had large depots of military supplies, and was a key center for shipping.[12]

If you want to point fingers here, point it at the Japanese government for their heavily imperialistic culture, reluctance to surrender, and the capacity to hone both civilians and soldiers into literal weapons of war to be expended if it meant taking out a few American lives.
