Do you think the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were justified?

You already disregard my opinions, so I have no problem saying it was justified.

All signs pointed to Japan continuing the Pacific War, costing more lives, resources and money than the bombs ever incurred. (The casualties of the Pacific War was already in the 30 million+ whereas the Atomic Bombs killed 200,000, just to add a little addendum).

Call it consequentialism if you want, but it certainly was justified.

It was justified since the other option was to invade Japan and kill so many more lives.

Though the bombings were obviously excessive, I think that was kind of the point.

absolutely, japan was willing to fight to the last man, and the only way to stop the war with them without millions more dead on each side was the bombs.

It was either the bombs or we invaded their mainland. If that was the case there would have been far more causalities than what was with the bombs. The Japanese were already commenting suicide. The soldiers were flying their planes into ships and there were those charges. Even the civilians were jumping to their deaths on the islands we were taking. If we invaded Japan there would be mass suicides on a city to national level. Millions would have died because of it. The bombs were the best option. The other problem about an invasion is Russia. The country would have been split into North and South Japan just like Korea, Vietnam and Berlin.

http://www.todayifoundout.com/index.php/2010/02/a-japanese-soldier-who-continued-fighting-wwii-29-years-after-the-japanese-surrendered-because-he-didnt-know/

A Japanese soldier fought WWII for 29 years after it ended, because his commanding officer never gave him the order that the war was over. This is what every Japanese soldier was willing to do, fight til the last man.

The bombs were excessive, but simply invading them wouldn't have made them surrender.

Quote
On December 26th, 1944, Onoda was sent to Lubang Island in the Philippines.  His orders from his commanding officers, Major Yoshimi Taniguchi, were simple:

You are absolutely forbidden to die by your own hand. It may take three years, it may take five, but whatever happens, we’ll come back for you. Until then, so long as you have one soldier, you are to continue to lead him. You may have to live on coconuts. If that’s the case, live on coconuts! Under no circumstances are you [to] give up your life voluntarily.

This. The alternative was the escalation of the ground effort on the Pacific Front, and a full-scale invasion of the densely populated Japanese islands would have resulted in obscene collateral damage. War comes with an unfortunate reality; sometimes you have to compromise and perform an evil act in order to prevent more devastation.

Obviously, but we wouldn't have gotten anywhere if we grounded our thinking on infantile sentiments like that. Difficult decisions have to be made that sometimes come with a heavy cost attached. It's an unfortunate facet of the world we inhabit, but parroting "killing r teh bad" back and forth isn't going to solve anything.

I said it was bad, I didn't say it wasn't necessary to end a war that would probably continue for more years with more casualties.

And as terrible as the bombings were, it was the only thing that realistically could save Japan.  They would have thrown every last person at the invaders before submitting.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
Ultimately a cruel act, and barely justfiable.

The only good I see from it is that we truly realised their power, and haven't used them in war since.

The first bomb was definitely justified. Japan had no intention of surrendering any time soon. It was necessary deterrent of future conflict.

The second bomb is debatable. I've heard from some that Japan was planning to surrender after Hiroshima and didn't have time to do so before Nagasaki, but others insist they would have continued anyway.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
The other problem about an invasion is Russia. The country would have been split into North and South Japan just like Korea, Vietnam and Berlin.
Yup. Two nuked cities left japan in a much better state than a first world/second world south/north split would have.
And there's no way a successful mainland invasion wouldn't have involved Russian aid after the way they devastated Japan's army groups in mainland Asia.
