Do you Support the Students Protesting in Colorado?

For reference to those who do not know, there is currently an ongoing protests by students in a Denver suburb of Colorado. Basically, a bunch of AP US History students have stopped going to class to protest a new proposal for curriculum in the class:

The protests are aimed at new JeffCo School Board member Julie Williams’ proposal, which states, in part: “Materials should promote citizenship, patriotism, essentials and benefits of the free enterprise system, respect for authority and respect for individual rights. Materials should not encourage or condone civil disorder, social strife or disregard of the law. Instructional materials should present positive aspects of the United States and its heritage.”

Essentially: Teach kids that America is great, write out stuff that would say otherwise.

Your first point is irrelevant, the number of people concerned does not determine the validity of a conplaint.

Your second point might make sense, if not for the fact that the proposal is essentially promoting blind nationalism AND revisionist history. I know you absolutely love the former, but even you should be smart enough to see the problem with the latter. If students don't have the right to decide what they are taught, teachers don't have the right to change history to support a false narrative.

Yes.

Then I fully support them. Here in the UK we too are only taught in History about the wonderful things the British did. Our curriculum fails to mention all the bad. I don't really like nationalism, it's an element of fascism.

Considering the protests are contained to a few AP classes, you're right. A small amount actually care, but that doesn't make their cause any less important.

I wouldn't say that it whitewashes history for the empire, it was more just omitted entirely from the curriculum I studied other than colouring in the countries we used to own in year 6...

We in the north never even get taught anything about the British empire. We're taught the jews and nothing but the jews in WWII, the battle of Hastings, that franz ferdinand got killed by a bunch of nationalists, the state of medicine from the Roman era to 1941, the history of the Durham steelworks and all about US westward expansion. Out of that The battle of Hastings and the history of the Durham steel works is the only legitimate British history I have experienced since beginning school to completing GCSE history.

I'd support the students if they were demonstrating for the proposals to be implemented. They're certainly allowed to have a say in their education.

During the height of student protests in Greece I was going in High School. The rate of protests was the highest in my senior year, and as someone who was usually... Consulted by the ones involved in the school government, there was a huge interest to start a protest, but without any substantial need to do so.

Therefore, I do support student protests, but from students who actually know, and understand the issue. Those who appear because they are following without knowing, or those who merely want to skip class deserve no attention whatsoever in the matter.

That's pretty much the same as what I did in history, although substitute the American west and Durham steel for the Suffragettes, Liberal Reforms and Treaty of Versailles. And a focus on Hitler's rise to power too.

The only bits to do with the empire I actually remember doing were the colouring in the countries thing in middle school and briefly talking about it in terms of WW1.

Oh and the Tudors. The fucking Tudors I must have done about 7 times throughout school. God that was boring.
