Do you guys have hope for space exploration in the near future?

Put aside all our current petty problems. Do you think anything big will happen? Mars is guaranteed. Our next closest star? Maybe one day. Maybe even another Galaxy. I have unfortunately just watched a video recently bearing sad news. Apparently, any hope of us ever leaving our Local Cluster is next to none. The galaxies within our cluster stay together. But other clusters are constantly moving farther away. By the time The Milky Way and Andromeda collide, people in that time won't even be able to see other galaxies outside our cluster their so far away. Nor will they see Cosmic Background Radiation. But ah well. That still leaves thousands of galaxies for us. Hopefully there's more than one species of intelligent life in each cluster.

Yeah and Terraform mars. A good way of getting rid of all our nuclear weapons? Blow them up in Mars atmosphere. :P Can't say I agree with that idea. While it might work overtime it just seems like it would create more problems to begin with. Nuclear Winter, more radiation, etc...

We're more technologically behind on space travel than we were in the 70's due to none of the blueprints being saved. I had a long talk with my astronomy teacher about it.

It's honestly really fucking depressing.

How so? We can do the same stuff we did back then right now, and more. It's all a matter of money.

Our next closest star? Maybe one day. Maybe even another Galaxy

It would take several millennia at a minimum with technologies attainable in a reasonable timeframe to reach Proxima Centauri. To reach the outer edge of the Milky Way would take hundreds, if not thousands of millennia. To cross the intergalactic medium would take literally billions of years and technology and industry that is simply impossible with anything attainable with something that can be measured with actual science.

I'd be surprised if we even got as far as the Asteroid Belt in our lifetimes with manned craft.  If we're really lucky, we might see people in orbit around the Giants.

Sure there is. We could mine other planets, asteroids, moons. Discover new things. Maybe find life. And the future of humans depends on colonizing other planets.

As for the time it takes to travel to other places in response to the other post. We could always hope for a breakthrough. Like near or FTL travel or collapsing space time around you. Crazy how that all works with time dilation and all. Think I read if someone traveled at light speed for 1 year 10 years would pass for us here. But what if for example we're communicating over video chat? Seems like a paradox.

If only it were so simple and affordable.

I'd have a rocket built and I'd go far far away from this planet from all of you.

But its not.

Best case scenario us exploring space violates some intergalactic treaty that we didn't know about that demands our immediate extinction

Worse case scenario we discover hospitable planets and populate them.

No, we can't. Engineers today literally do not understand how they made the Saturn V rockets due to the plans being lost over time via shut downs and what not. They have an idea, but blueprints are gone. Last I checked they had to call the engineers in from the Apollo program to help them build their recent rocket or whatever it was.

You have to wonder, are alien memes more technologically advanced? Would exposure to alien memes destroy terran memes?

Fuck. Well. We do have places like SpaceX. They want to put people on Mars before 2030 I think. And they've been making good progress. Landings have been made and they even re supplied ISS.

I read that as ISIS

Yeah we're working towards it, it's just horribly depressing that we as humans have literally regressed in terms of spacefare.

Why is the "future of humans" important? Why do you care about that? Why do we have to colonize anything?

There's no point.

I know you're usually a soggy napkin when it comes to these things, but I wanna ask it in a different context. A lot of people want to get out to space because they've something to gain. Resources, continued species stuff, all that.

The size and scope of everything just in our system alone would be something to see firsthand. You hear all these facts and see all these photos, but it never really dawns on you since you can't go there in person.

I like traveling. If you suddenly had access to a ship, a free all expense paid deal to just cruise around the solar system for one time, with the ability to land on any landable body in the system, would you take it?

Because we as humans have an innate trait to want to explore and dare to dream bigger

If you're going to bet all your hopes on being able to break the laws of physics, then there's really no point having a discussion.

For time dilation to kick in with noticeable effects you'd need to be travelling around 10%C.

Lightspeed is unatainable because to get anything that has more than zero mass to that velocity you would need literally infinite energy. To get anywhere near velocities measured in percentages of C you'd need the kind of tech you see in science fiction.

I hate to break it to you but science fiction is called science fiction for a reason.
