It would probably be beneficial if we had some sort of mandatory public works program, though.

Well,I'm no military type in the first place, so I'd probably be pissing myself the whole way through.

It's difficult to say, because some places really need to have a ready military force to defend their borders. Given the right circumstances, I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with it.

But I don't think countries that that don't need it should have it anyway, like the US, for example. We're fortunate enough to not have borders with hostile countries, for one thing.

It can't work in large nations like America. I can see the point if you're a small enough country where you need the bodies that badly, but I think you can take more pride in having a highly effective voluntary military instead of an army of conscripts.

No one likes being forced into something they shouldn't have to do, especially Americans. We don't need to be forced to be conscripted because we have such a large population and strong military. This isn't Finland where Russia is constantly biting at their heels.

I suppose its more of set up a hypothetical that you lived in a Switzerland or Israel sized state where mandatory service works would you agree with it?

I'm not sure. I can see the benefits of it, but I've never been a fan of FORCING someone to do something they more or less wouldn't want to do. I'm 50/50 on it. There is only so much 5 and a half months of training can do for you in the real world aside from combat too.

I've known a lot of servicepeople who let their service flavor their entire life that way. They always have to butt into conversations with some barely relevant information about something that happened their military service
