Quote
“For months, even for years, through seven sessions of Congress, I wondered, what would bring this body to take action?” Lewis said while Democrats slowly surrounded him at the microphone. “We have lost hundreds and thousands of innocent people to gun violence. Tiny little children. Babies. Students. And teachers. Mother and fathers. Sisters and brothers. Daughters and sons. Friends and neighbors. And what has this body done? Mr. Speaker, not one thing.”

They've also failed to present any sort of coherent plan. Ban scary black guns? Ban people on the no-fly list (zero due process or accountability) from buying guns? Ban magazines with lots of rounds?

I'm not particularly beholden to either camp, but the day guns are criminalized in America is the day would-be-mass-shooters realize it's incredibly easy to drive a car bomb through the front door of a crowded building. Reactionary politics is really little more than taking advantage of a tragic situation for an apparent moral/political highground, and it's repulsive.

A response I saw on another forum sums up this action:

This is pointless. It's a bad bill and will never pass, even if they do bring it up for a vote. They aren't actually trying to do anything, they just want to force the republicans to vote no so they can make easy attacks that are much harder to explain away then to claim.

This is not the greatest sig in the world, no. This is just a tribute.
None of their sensible proposals would have stopped Omar from purchasing his Sig MCX. What is the point of dramatizing the scenario like this?

At this point, they're basically going for "doing something is better than doing nothing at all".
Which it is. I don't understand why they can't come to an agreement over universal background checks. Having a moment of silence and just praying isn't going to change anything.

It won't fix everything, but you'd think they could come to an agreement that 90% of the American people want.. Like I said in another thread. No one answer IS the answer, but not working towards anything at all while expecting things to change, is the very definition of insanity.

Also to anyone wondering, the GOP did the same thing over Drill Baby Drill back I'm 2011, but obviously wasn't as big as this since this is far more emotional and getting far more coverage. I'm not surprised about this though. Something had to give and people are getting sick of the government not doing much of anything despite massive support for these things.

You will find out who you are not a thousand times, before you ever discover who you are. I hope you find peace in yourself and learn to love instead of hate.
Had hoped in 03/04 one day Iraqi parliament would emulate decorum of US Congress. Disappointing to see Congress emulating Iraqi parliament.

For anyone on the pro-gun side (if that's what it can be called), what exactly is the opposition over universal background checks? I understand that it would place a burden on small dealers or individuals selling guns, but is that the only argument against them?

I also recognize that, as far as I'm aware, those background checks wouldn't have prevented any recent mass-shooter from obtaining weapons, but it just seems like a common sense law.

Sadly, this sort of passion should be demanded of our elected officials. Yet we only see it on election years. In 5 short months they'll all be back to voting themselves pay raises and looking for ways not to work.

Both parties get "run" by the NRA.

If the dems were so invested in gun control, why didn't they pass this back in 2006-2009 when they had control of congress?

Answer: Because neither party (especially the democrats) give a fuck about you or anything unless its an election year.

Why wasn't Obama so outspoken about this from 2008-2012 when every night there were dozens of murders in his hometown of chicago?

Answer: Because his pussy ass was too interested in getting reelected.

I don't even know man... I think my state requires them  for all sales from a dealer (or at least handguns. Tbh I don't know about long guns) and I had to get one done for my cc permit.
Private handgun sales also need to go through an FFL or shit can come back to you hardcore if that man ever does something dumb with that gun.
There really should be any opposition to a federal background check mandate.

It was like gay marriage. Republicans were easily bashing it, and democrats were reluctant to talk about it (due to the Clintons tugging the Democrats to the right/center back in the 90's). Now however after a lot of events, especially within the last 6 months, Democrats are openly embracing it and making it their platform like Gay Marriage rights were.

Does that make it right? Absolutely not. Frankly it took too long for them to do it, because at the end of the day yeah. Back then the support for such legislation wasn't nearly as high as it is now (90%+ want background checks, 80%ish Republicans also want it).

I'm just glad there are Republicans working their asses off for SOME kind of compromise. Lindsey Graham has been someone I've liked more and more this entire election cycle since he's actually sticking by his ideals and not just caving in.

my father tried to buy me a glock 17 when i was 16 but couldn't while he was getting a background check for a job position at the DoD

he wasn't allowed to purchase the firearm at a gun shop during the days ongoing the background check

20 years in the navy, high level security clearance, worked at the petagon, worked for defense contractor for military training simulation programs, no criminal record at all but with all that history they still denied him the firearm

Background checks already are universal- for FFL dealers.

Are there any statistics available detailing whether any mass shootings (or a significant amount of gun crimes) were perpetrated with weapons purchased by non-FFL dealers?

Basically, I'm just curious to see if that measure would even make a dent or if it's just more feel-good legislation.
