It seems that as online groups and boards start to stand out more in the modern age and start overlapping with mainstream, the more it seems that the battle of online anonymity online is being fought and money is being invested to force people to sacrifice their anonymity online.

It seems the bots and certain trolling or toxic community are in pride of their anonymity trying to fish for reactions. But it seems their wins and fun is starting to cause friction with mainstream and certain groups especially the business community. This friction seems to have brought a new issue of online rights to the discussion. After the Arab Spring it was noticeable how certain authoritarian government had started to control the internet watching the flows and targeting traffic and hunting dissenters.

Although the reasoning in Western States are different it seems that issues of toxic and national unrest has caused problems, from foreign organization spreading misinformation and local government trying to keep their nation stable by trying to stiffle discussion that bring headaches to the government and start divisive discourse. It seems the solution is forcing people to put their face out there if they preach any of these ideas or make any of these comments on public boards. Thing comments to their real life person's. Taking away the protection to say what you want without fear of reprecussion. Basically have people self-censor themselves if they do not want people they know to know what thoughts they have.

Eh, I can see the pros and cons of animosity. Obviously a pro being you don't need to worry about someone knowing exactly who you are if you're just posting and just browsing

but at the same time it opens up the door for a lot of harassment and toxic rhetoric as you've mentioned. It's been shown that when these people who harass like that are exposed, they change their tune real fast too. So idk.

Because the rules of engagement online are not the same as interacting with someone face to face.

Quote
Why, then, would we not have those same rules when we choose to live in the global online community?

the one true God is Doctor Doom and we should all be worshiping him.
Eh, I can see the pros and cons of animosity.

More cons than pros I hope.

Damn. People are such pussies these days.
Are people pussies for wanting to know who the person insulting them really is?

Or are people pussies cause they will say what they want behind a mask, but never in public without a mask on.

If I'm not here, I'm doing photography. Or I'm asleep. Or in lockdown. One of those three, anyway.

The current titlebar/avatar setup is just normal.
I think anonymity is good, it shows what people really think when there aren't risks of losing social standing, or other more serious ramifications.

You get better discourse as you can have the confidence/hide behind the anonymity to argue a claim or standpoint, even if it isn't the most popular, or outright hated. Even if it's a viewpoint that is vilified for legitimate reasons, it can show others how many people support that view in reality behind closed doors behind a more civil facade, and allows planners to actually combat it.

Take a general example such as racism. Most people are civil and respectable until some loon with the balls to start a riot over it pulls enough support to drag the more moderate/civil bystanders into the protest, and then all hell breaks loose. If the police knew that 25% of the population held those beliefs but didn't act on them normally, they could have more officers on standby for when said loon gets a riot going, and control it faster before anything more serious happened.

It doesn't matter who actually holds those beliefs, only how many when something like that is going to happen, so when a violent protest or a more serious scenario like a mob lynching or whatever happens it can be dealt with who they are then.

I wish I could explain that better, but unfortunately I am not a genius.

Anonymity is good, because it allows people to be more open about their viewpoints, embarassing stuff and depression. Because such openness, communities with common believes are created, which basically groups people. The more people holds your believes the more confidence you have in them, however it matters who holds believes as well, because if it is a person you admire and which has a lot influence on you, he/she might sharpen or alter your believes and even it might become a leader for you.
I don`t know if it`s more genuine or not, but it`s shorter.

You sure, I have seen Conservative act the same way as well. Well it actually more depends what segment of the conservative and liberal faction you are looking. Usually the vocal minority.

Anonymity is valuable because it allows us to get an unfiltered look into the mind of the average person and allows for discussions that aren't considered polite in normal society to take place. I don't even know why this needs to be discussed.
