Transgender people already serve in the military. It's not immediately clear how Trump intends to implement the ban, but the Pentagon announced Wednesday that it will defer enlistments by transgender applicants.

"Secretary [James] Mattis today approved a recommendation by the services to defer accessing transgender applicants into the military until Jan. 1, 2018," Chief Pentagon spokesperson Dana White said in a statement. "The services will review their accession plans and provide input on the impact to the readiness and lethality of our forces."

All applications by transpeople to serve in the military will be deferred until 2018 while the military "reviews" the costs. This is a remarkably shameful thing he's done here, and while I do understand the stance of not wanting to not only cover the cost of transitioning but also paying the salary and training for a person that effectively can't deploy and is in a downed medical status for months at a time, it's the sudden reversal after significant efforts have been made to welcome trans servicemembers that is embarrassing here. I'm sure Charlie and Das can attest to the same, but as someone currently serving I can guarantee you the military is barely accepting of gays, and the openness towards transpeople was an important step towards normalizing the entire LGBT community.

I don't see a problem with this. Don't ask don't tell was also a good policy in my opinion.
