for me, it has virtually nothing to do with punishment, though--punishment is for the emotional, which is kinda what i was getting at earlier, because humans have this innate desire for retribution--we want to see criminals suffer, but that's irrational

i realize the death penalty as it exists right now is not perfect, and that's a huge problem--but i think we can improve it

I don't think that's a very good comparison since the wrapper

A. Didn't do anything wrong

B. Is an inanimate object with no moral or ethical codes attached to it

Couldn't you just as easily say throwing him in a jail cell and throwing away the key is akin to throwing away garbage?

Not if you don't think that's sufficient. People like to say it's cheaper to just do that, and that may be true, but what is the point? What's the point of keeping somebody like that alive? To satiate some carnal desire to see someone locked up? The comforting knowledge that they won't get "the easy way out"?

More so because later on a lot of them regret their actions and have to live with the burden of the crimes they've committed. In a sense, part of them has already died.

Because one is a mercy and the other is a torture. You could argue doing the same exact thing to them (torturing), makes you no better than the killer. Do you want revenge or retribution?

If you're looking at it from an ends justifies the means perspective, no. If you're looking at it from a more ethical and humane perspective, yes.
