Quote
Plan:
Rebuild America Act: Sen. Sanders has proposed a $1 trillion plan to rebuild our crumbling infrastructure and put 13 million Americans to work.

Payment:
Paid for by making corporations pay taxes on all of the “profits” they have shifted to the Cayman Islands and other offshore tax havens, which the Congressional Research Services estimates may currently create losses that approach $100 billion annually, and other loopholes.

Cost: $1T/10y
Revenue: $100B/y

Quote
Plan:
College for All: Sen. Sanders has proposed making public colleges and universities tuition-free and substantially reducing student debt, in a plan that would cost about $75 billion a year.

Payment:
Paid for by imposing a tax on Wall Street speculators that would generate about $300 billion in revenue.

Cost: $75B/y
Revenue: $300B/y

Quote
Plan:
Expand and Extend Social Security: Sen. Sanders has proposed expanding Social Security and extending the solvency of this program until 2065.

Payment:
Paid for by lifting the cap on taxable income above $250,000 so that the wealthy pay the same percentage of their income into Social Security as working people.

Cost: $1.2T/10y
Revenue: $1.2T/10y

Quote
Plan:
Youth Jobs Program: Sen. Sanders has proposed a $5.5 billion youth jobs program to create 1 million jobs for disadvantaged young Americans.

Payment:
Paid for by ending the carried interest loophole that allows billionaire hedge fund managers to pay a lower tax rate than nurses and truck drivers.

Cost: $5.5B/2y
Revenue: $15.6B/10y

Quote
Plan:
Paid Family and Medical Leave: Sen. Sanders has proposed at least 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave to all workers.

Payment:
Paid for by a payroll tax that would total $1.61 a week for the typical American worker. According to Sen. Gillibrand’s office, this would be “a self-sufficient program that would not add to the federal budget.”

Cost:
Revenue: $319 billion/10y

Quote
Plan:
Protect Pensions: Sen. Sanders has introduced a plan to prevent cuts to the pensions of over 1.5 million Americans.

Payment:
Paid for by closing two tax loopholes that allow the wealthy to avoid taxes on money they inherit and  expensive artwork they collect.

Cost: $29B/10
Revenue: $29B/10y

Quote
Plan:
Renewable Energy and Clean Jobs Transition: Sen. Sanders has a plan to invest in clean, sustainable energy sources powered by the sun, wind and Earth’s heat. He also has a plan to provide comprehensive benefits to workers as they transition to making the solar panels, wind turbines, and batteries of tomorrow.

Payment:
Paid for by stopping taxpayer-funded giveaways to oil, gas and coal companies.

Cost: $110B/10y
Revenue: $135B/10y

Some good, some bad, some utterly ridiculous.

The only thing I can really get behind is paid parental leave, as long as it's shared.

Congratulations on coming to terms with the folly of the Democratic party and the prices associated with their handouts.
I know you have many options for your governmental leadership, and hope you consider Gary Johnson as your presidential choice in 2016.

I'd vote for him in a heartbeat if he embraced nuclear energy the same way instead of propagating the same nuclear-fearmongering we've seen for decades. It's insane that the democratic party hasn't spearheaded nuclear energy.

It's pretty horrifying that his plan to pay for college tuition and housing by taxing speculators assumes a 50% fall in trading as a result of the tax.

Just a reminder that the stock market isn't just a profit-pool for rich bankers, it's the source of gains for retirement plans, insurance groups, philanthropic investments, shareholders, and small businesses. It doesn't exist just to be taxed whenever the government desires.

This is ironically conservative.

Education is invaluable.
While I like the romanticism and agree with your fundamental point that education is justified as an end in itself, we aren't talking about "education". We're talking about a specific portion of a larger educational programme which interacts with other sections of the education and the labour market in empirical ways.

People are being mis-educated on a substantial scale, and while higher education should also be something in which the government has a substantial degree of control there is no evidence whatsoever than Sanders' plans are the correct ones.

Really? I think it's a pretty neutral statement, actually. You'd have to be cripplingly selfish and myopic not to recognize that your life does not matter as much as those in your wake will, but selflessness is not a concept I expect libertarians such as Door to be too familiar with.

I'm not saying it's exclusively conservative, but the philosophical underpinnings of conservatism can be traced easily back to Burke and his intergenerational contract.

couldn't this literally be said about even basic education back in times where only the affluent would have any type of formal schooling?

is ubiquitous education really bad in the long term?

No, we already have ubiquitous education.

The point is about tertiary education's place with relation to the entire system.

Door's an anarchist.

And I'm all familiar with selflessness and charity, but when I do it, I want it done of my own will.

For the government to force me to give under threat of gunpoint is no different than coercion and theft. Someone who cares about consent as much as an anti-natalist must surely recognize the unethical implications converting a nation to a socialistic nanny state.

Why do you say either of those things

Free tuition seems to be something other countries do, and it works fine for them.

I'm not really too educated with economics, politics, or the education system in the US, and I'm sure there are technicalities to "Free tuition," but offering an education to as many people as possible seems like an undeniably good idea, even if there's still going to be some form of payment in the long run. Like, I would prioritize the opportunity for everybody to receive a good education above many other things, and I feel like that's a pretty reasonable mentality.

Is education not the fundamental force that allows for innovation and progress?

No, it really doesn't.
