"Snipers are cowards"

Is there anyone here who actually believes this? First off, anyone who puts their life on the line for what they believe to be a good cause isn't a coward. And secondly, snipers are in just as bad of a situation as the basic footsoldiers. They have to deal with larger threats, enemy snipers. It baffles me why anyone (Michael Moore especially) would say something like that. What are your thoughts?

Snipers are fucking insane. Disassemble a bolt carrier and throw the pieces into field and I ain't never finding them.... these motherfuckers gotta do it in a certain time limit. Crawling in fields, moving an inch a minute and shit, calculating extreme levels of elevation and windage and shit, shitting yourself because you have to stay hidden and shit... fuck that.

Its a stupid remark, tell that to a German, Soviet or Japanese sniper during World War 2, back than if you got caught as a sniper they shot you on the spot.

I'd say the job takes a bit of bravery.

But in war, it depends. Do they kill anyone they can?
Suppose they wound an enemy soldier, and he's being dragged by a teammate to safety. He shoots the enemy soldier helping his wounded teammate.

It depends on the soldier's conduct and combat behavior. In that regard, any soldier can be a coward or cold-blooded, not just snipers.

All the neocons are up in arms about those tweets. I think it's pretty obvious that Seth Rogen's tweet was just a joke and not meant to compare us to Nazis. I didn't take Michael Moore's comment as much moore than poorly thought-out ramblings. How are you going to call a sniper a coward, and say nothing about bombers or people that control drones, etc?

If snipers are cowards; then so are the entire artillery corps, airforce, navy (Not the marines in this example), strategists, generals, logistical corps, medical divisions, engineers.... you get the point. Just because they aren't charging into buildings and CQB doesn't mean they are cowardly.

Cold blooded bastards? Sure. You kind of have to be, to spend ages watching someone face through a scope only to then pull the trigger and paint the wall with their brains day in day out. Doing stuff like wounding an enemy combatant and waiting for his friend to come and drag his ass out of the fire to get two for the price of one? Yeah, that's cold blooded bastardy but that's certainly not cowardice.

Snipers are essential and I'm pretty sure they face the worst fate if they get caught as one, they did in WW2 and I doubt the Taliban/AQ/ISIS are particularly forgiving of them.

Let alone the insane amount of skill required to shoot a bullet so far the curvature of the earth is affecting it and still have it burst someone's noggin.

Snipers aren't cowards, at all.

The people who say it are the ones who get buttmad in games, like me on battlefield.

But the amount o skill it takes to be able to adjust to compensate for gravity, wind and many other factors to nail a target that could be te size of a pea is astounding.

I remember watching a documentary detailing the mission of one sniper who had to crawl into enemy lines, move only inches a day, locate a single high priority target, nail a perfect shot, then escape.

Well, it's pretty easy to be brave if you think lots of scantly clad virgins are awaiting you in the afterlife.

Back on topic though, the people who say those sorts of things are stupid. War isn't a chivalric one to one duel. It's about killing the other guy before he kills you. You don't give the enemy a fair fight, because then you've got a 50% chance to lose it. I'm willing to bet that most of those WWI charges boiled down to kicking the other guy in the balls and then beating him to death with your trench spade, if you were lucky enough not to be sawn in half by machine gun fire in the middle of no-mans-land.

So performing open heart surgery from 800 meters away is fair game. Blowing up a few white dots on a FLIR screen is fair game.

Because the other guy would do it to you or your buddies if he had the chance.

You're right. Taking over a school and having gunman taking young kids hostage along with suicide bombers being in groups around these young kids is one of the bravest things you can do. After all those kids are going to be able to fight back. What also takes balls is making a car bomb and using it on a FBI building that's a daycare that killed over 100 kids. Lets not forget the Sandy Hooks or that movie theater shooting. Those people had some balls to do things like that.

I think I heard somewhere that their bad reputation comes from people in the military who faced other snipers, and were batshit terrified that there was some guy killing of the friends just by sitting in a corner yards away.
