The state gives way more benefits to married couples than those in a civil union.

Not to mention just being able to say "my husband/wife", "we've been married for X years", etc.

You're not from America right?  As far as I know (Turkey made a good post on this a while ago), they aren't equal in the U.S.

A teacher, an accountant, a priest, and 3 kids are on a plane with only three parachutes onboard. The engine explodes, and the plane goes into a dive. The teacher yells, "save the kids!"; the accountant yells, "fuck the kids!"; the priest looks at the accountant and whispers, "is there enough time?"

No it isn't, there are many types of marriages which weren't a religions type of thing. For example royal families used marriage for diplomatic reasons like in As0FAI/Game of Thrones.

It's a sign of commitment and devotion to the person you love, promising you won't leave. Of course it doesn't always work out, but a lot people do get married because the see it as the ultimate expression of their love.

Except not even remotely, because Christmas isn't even a Christian holiday. The Bible makes no mention of the exact birthdate of Christ (it's almost certainly not December 25th), and it's widely considered to be a pagan (see: sacrilegious) holiday that is no more about religious sacrament today than is having a birthday party for your child.

It's even condemned in the Bible, which, frankly, is all the more reason for atheists to celebrate it.
Quote
Jeremiah 10:2 - 4

Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

It's not condemned; the tree isn't an idol to a Christian -- it's not worshiped or prayed to, as is done in Jeremiah 10 -- and the act of decorating and gift-giving is wholly removed from religious ceremony. It's not a pagan holiday; it has its origins in pagan Saturnalia, but was adopted by the Catholics. Its religious significance is symbolic, meaning it's celebrating Jesus' birth, not the specific day. It was practiced by most people in the Roman Empire then, just as it is now.

Yeah, because it no longer celebrated the Roman pantheon.

Nice.

Well, I agree that it's a pointless holiday (as per the very nature of holidays), but the way you responded to Maverick's post seemed to imply that you thought only Christians should celebrate Christmas, or something like that.

What about a social contract/legally binding agreement between two individuals is inherently religious?  And if it was, why should it have to stay that way?

Well, I kinda do think that, but only in the sense that Christ's birth is what should be celebrated and all the pagan bs like the trees and consumerism gift giving should be dropped. And like you said, the actual date of the holiday should be moved.

Because to me marriage isn't between two individuals, it's between 3. The man, the woman and God. If that isn't the definition of marriage, it should be. Ecclesiastes compares it to that of a rope, with 3 individual strands making a stronger line. That's also why divorce was a much bigger issue before, because marriage used to involve God, and if you divorced, you were divorcing God as well.

There's almost always a church, a priest, verses, etc. at a wedding, because it's always been a very religious ceremony. And it should stay that way.

Not in the US, or most European countries.

I disagree with marriage's place in government though and have been an advocate of the abolition of marriage as a legal status for some time, especially considering the number of marriages that end in divorce, it places a huge strain on the civil judiciary sector.
