Yea give the mods hell boy!
Wait a sec...

You've forgotten that I'm essentially the Charles-Henri Sanson of the staff Tblocks. I don't discriminate.
Oh good. I'm relieved. Praise god almighty!

If it did we'd have to automatically rule out other members that people like for past transgressions.

I mean if the community really wants a "if you've done something bad in the past you should never have a chance at becoming staff in the future" approach we can do that.

I miss all the fun when I sleep, lawdy.

I've skimmed through the thread and modchat and it looks like there will be a few new changes, if they haven't already been implemented.

One thing I'll point out that has been a standing policy since sep7agooks became a thing (or at the very least since I started in the staff with LC) is that retroactive punishment is absolutely haram.
It might seem like someone is getting away with it, but the flip side of that is that we would be making a rule to punish someone for something that they did when what they did (at the time) was not against the rules. That kind of shit reeks of modabuse and we've steered clear of it forever and it's gonna stay that way.

Finding and exploiting loopholes is something every set of rules has to endure, we aren't omniscient and usually the only way to find a loophole is to watch someone climb through it. Then we patch it up so they can't do it again.

I'll drop my two pence in here regarding a spoiler-warning system but it's of course subject to change/discussion/refining in HQ.

If someone posts an unwitting spoiler, I'd say just an edit is all that's required. Remove it, spoiler it, something like that. It happens and I've seen it happen a lot, people discussing something they like i.e a new episode of something - they get carried away and spoil bits of it for the other person/people.

If someone is doing it repeatedly to fuck with others, i.e someone posting a thread called X CHARACTER DIES IN EPISODE Y AHAHAHAHHAHAHHWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWdesu etc then that's clearly not halal.
Then I'd be all for a straight up ban, the number of days I'm not sure of yet but loosely if it's obvious I don't think a warning is the right approach.

The rules in general are about due for a refining/review thing because the forum changes style fairly often rules become defunct and other ones become needed so this might be a good time to drag the staff into a thread for that and then see what the community thinks of the potential changes.

Well this went places while I was asleep.

Can I just say that it's not just the fact that it was spoilers. It was the malicious intent of posting spoilers in a specific thread full of people that really DIDN'T want it spoiled, then acting like a complete knob afterwards.

The angel agreed to trade a set of white wings for the head of another demon. Overjoyed, the demon killed one of his own and plucked the head right off its still-warm body.

The angel then led the demon to heaven, where he underwent centuries of the cruelest tortures imaginable. Finally, the pain was so great that he lost consciousness - at which point his dark wings turned the promised shade of white.
Cant help but notice the massive jerk of ''this and that for monitor/mod''

it's about solving a fucking problem

both lemon and i have said that we'd selflessly take the responsibility of dealing with spoilers

but we both selfishly want Verbatim to do it because he'd be the best at it.

This isn't a circle jerk. This is about solving a fucking problem, by any means.

Anyways, I'll add my thoughts on what should be done, however unrealistic.

1. FAR greater ban times/less warning/harsher punishments off the bat.
It's so difficult to break the rules in your everyday posts that if you do break them, you deserve to be punished. Furthermore, a greater punishment will work as a greater deterrence than "Oh, you don't get to come online for a few days. Sorry." That's barely a nuisance.

2. Posting spoilers for ANY media, given they're in a 3 week/month (video games for the former, movies and other things for the latter) bubble around its release date (3 weeks/months before and after) should result in HARSH punishments, minimum 2 weeks ban on first offence. This is obviously exclusive to posting spoilers with malicious intent, and would not apply to, say LC or Sandtrap's posts which were obviously unintentional. Also, threads that explicitly state "SPOILER ZONE", obviously, these rules don't apply (unless the thing that someone is spoiling is not relevant.) For example, if my thread was an MGSV spoiler thread, and Gats had posted, say, Star Wars Episode 7 spoilers with the intent of pissing us off, he needs a punishment.

3. The report function puts a unique SPOILER TAG around the post until a mod sees it, at which point they can either remove the comment or remove the spoiler tag around it. There's no way for this to be abused, and I expect it to be implemented. For example, as soon as Aria saw what Gats had posted, she could have reported it and that would have spoiler-tagged it for me and many others. Crisis averted. This needs to be implemented. Period.

4. Forum specific moderators/monitor hybrid. Specifically for gaming, I don't think the other forums need it, though Flood could eventually considering it'll probably attract all other kinds of media. These hybrids would ideally be able to do the following:
-ban users from that specific forum
-edit/remove specific posts
-move/lock/hide threads
All of which are only temporary until a superior takes a look. At which point, they can deal with the problems accordingly.  Specifically for Gats, if I was a hybrid in that scenario, I would have been able to:
-ban him from gaming
-remove his posts completely
Both of which wouldn't be permanent, and would only last until a moderator disapproves of them. Obviously I don't think someone should be banned from Gaming and not the other forums indefinitely, but it's to mitigate their potential to create an even bigger mess for that hybrid.
Truthfully, if you implemented my other suggestions, this one seems pretty redundant.

And finally, 5. The application for thread-specific extra permissions. I'll create an example.
My MGSV thread has existed for 20+ days, and I intend to update it for weeks to come in support of the game and our minor MGS subcommunity that we have on Sep7agon. We don't have enough MGS fans to have constant threads, and I like the idea of having one, giant thread instead of multiple because it unifies us. I digress, that's not the point. The point is, that I plan on taking care of that thread and constantly update it.
If I wanted absolute control, so that I could clean up the constant attack of derailment (Challenger, at least twice, came into my thread despite not being an MGS fan and wanting to piss us off) and spoilers, I could apply for extra permissions in that thread. I would get to edit/remove posts and lock/hide the thread. I wouldn't have this power ANYWHERE ELSE, ONLY in that thread.
If I abused it, it would simply be revoked, and all the changes I made could be reversed. And if you didn't think I was trustworthy at the get-go, you could deny me the ability at all.
I really don't see how this could meaningfully be abused at all, because the effects of its abuse could completely reversed.

That's all I got.

Someone deciding to go through a thread and report every post isn't abuse of the feature because it can't be abused at all.

That isn't abuse.

Everyone can still see those posts if they want, they're just uniquely spoiler tagged.

Yeah it's a minor inconvenience but if they are wrongfully reported, it could result in a warning from mods and a retraction of the unique spoiler tag.

The reason we favour him is because he'd be the best at it, not because we like him.

By that logic, you'd only want people who would be shit at the moderator position to be mods.

His eyebrows sparkling, his white beard hangs down to his chest. The thatched mats, spread outside his chise, spread softly, his splendid attos. He polishes, cross-legged, his makiri, with his eyes completely absorbed.

He is Ainu.

The god of Ainu Mosir, Ae-Oine Kamuy, descendant of Okiku-Rumi, He perishes, a living corpse. The summers day, the white sunlight, unabrushed, ends simply through his breath alone.

It's nice that someone can find enjoyment in the situation in a harmless way, and that's not sarcastic.

However, as has already been stated, it's not that it caused harm. It's that it involved ntentional harm, and it was allowed because it technically not against the rules. That's why we need to look into reforms; not even necessarily to punish retro-actively, but to make sure it doesn't happen again.

That's more than a minor inconvenience, honestly. That would make trudging through threads an absolute nightmare for everyone.

I might see a feature like that implemented if we have a minimum of 3-5 reports on a single post, but... by that point, it might be too late.

It's not unrealistic--it's just not a good idea, straight-up. Gotta be honest.

Well lets say that feature comes in and gets implemented across the board for any post that breaks or bends the rules, so many posts will be spoilered pointlessly, on top of idiots abusing it, that's it's really just a waste of staff time to deal with.

For a different community, it'd probably be effective, as it stands with what we have, it's an inconvenience at best.
Unless it's bundled with harsher punishment of course.

Or like Verb said, multiple reports to one post spoiler it.

How? All it takes is a click to remove the spoiler-tag.
I do see how it could be a greater inconvenience, though. But I think the end justifies the means. I'd rather have to deal with that sometimes that not have the feature at all.

Well see the trouble with that is that someone could just post 6 spoilers, and have 5 of them reported and spoiler-tagged. That sixth spoiler is still visible.

Also, like I said, a punishment for abuse of this system would be met with warning and bans.

Hence, the punishments for those who abuse the system as a deterrent not to.

As it stands you can only report once a minute. This could be increased as well.

Unrelated to this completely but there is a logo change inbound soon and martial law is also likely to be implemented for the greater good.

Whilst a unique position is unlikely to be made for this, there is no reason why the posts containing spoilers cannot be reported via the normal functions, if you report the post with 'Spoiler - Reason why (if it's not obvious)' then there are enough mods around to see it within a reasonable timeframe. With the new Spoiler rules being implemented fairly soon, this should at least solve that problem/close the loophole.
