The punishments will be interesting to hear. I'm still disappointed Guts is getting off easy but I'm sure the team will draft up fair and harsh ( >:] ) punishments for this kind of stuff.

No, the monitor wouldn't have extra perms

Without extra permissions it's seems like a largely redundant solution.

It's a vulnerability because it would allow users to basically delete and edit posts to their heart's content within their own threads, and that doesn't promote open discussion.

I would've have said it doesn't matter, because if people don't like it they can make their own thread. But I'll leave that point alone.

However, could it be possible for someone like myself, who has an active interest in updating his thread constantly, to "apply" for mod powers in their own thread? A mod or member of staff could look over my behavior and deem if I'm worthy of such permissions. If it was abused, it could simply be revoked, and I would be punished accordingly.

The goal is to never have this happen again. It was devastating to me, even if most people just shrug it off. I know there are others like me, and I don't want them to experience that.

Quote
We're still talking about the punishments and Icy isn't finished drafting up the rules/explanation yet.

I just want to add my two cents in here: if the punishment isn't severe enough, it's not going to successfully deter these kind of people from doing it. I know a 2 or 3 month ban might seem ridiculous, but games launch every 2-3 months. Someone could simply do this, get banned, and return just in time to ruin another game.

A moderator that only has powers in Gaming is still the best option

A ban for spoiling a game won't last that long, at least as a first time offense. Depending on the severity, at most a week for a first time.

Of course, with quickly increasing increments.

Humour me.

What would Gats' punishment be if these rules were implemented a few months ago? How long would his ban last?

So then who should I ask?

Because if he was going to get banned for a week based on his actions, his goal is accomplished. He ruined the game for people 3 days ahead of it's release. He'll be back on this forum by the time people are completing the main story.

There needs to be a greater deterrence to discourage this shit in the future. I'm sorry, a week is ridiculous.

If you are that concerned over remaining spoiler free, I suggest avoiding Gaming forums in general in the ramp up to your release schedule. We are not the only forum where people decide to be heartless pricks and spoil stories, but even with the upcoming policy, we cannot guarantee that someone won't PM you a spoiler, or hide it in a random thread.

We hope that the policy currently being worked on will limited that as much as possible, but we are never going to be able to tell you 100% "This is a spoiler free, safe zone"

Welcome to the internet.

I wanted to but felt a responsibility to my thread as a countdown. I stated multiple time that I would like to pass on the responsibilities. Which would also be a nice feature.

I can only receive PMs from people on my buddy list. Whom I know won't send me spoilers.

So, yeah, you can guarantee that.

I would be open to users applying to have deletion and locking perms in their own threads. That's a fair idea, to be sure.

Simply the truth. If someone really wants to be an ass and spoil something for others, they'll find a way. We'll do what we can to cover all our bases, but we can't see everything, everywhere, 24/7, 365 days a year.

How is "Welcome to the internet" a "simple truth"?

And it's exceptionally easy on this forum.

I'm not even asking you to do this.

I'm asking for severe punishments when it does to deter people from doing it

and I'm asking for application of extra thread-permissions

the former being the far lesser request.

Reminder that deletion and locking permissions will likely never become a thing due to the potential of abuse, even when trimmed down to members who are less likely to abuse them.

Another reminder that board specific mods/monitors will never be a thing, such a limiting position isn't needed, especially not one caused by such an incident, maybe if we had the size but not how things are right now.

We are looking at all our options and seeing what will benefit the forum the most. That's all I can say right now, as the staff will continue discussing plans tomorrow and into Monday, most likely.

Evidently it is needed though. Also, "not having enough people" seems like a pretty stupid reason.

If the person is up to the task, what's the downside.

Week bans for spoilers? Not even people who post porn get that much, thats overly severe for the what it is.

Reports are well enough for that, and like its been stated the staff has been discussing a new spoiler rule, so in the instance it goes through all and all this won't happen as bad as it did.

Obviously you aren't even paying attention. That's not even my alternative.

And I disagree with your statement. If the punishment is high enough people won't do it, thus not having to ban.

Not to mention the obvious harassment on gats' part.

No.

The idea that people can apply for thread-specific permissions.

Scroll Down to the Strict Rules Punishment

One month bans for a spoiler will not happen, I can guarantee you that much.

No.

The idea that people can apply for thread-specific permissions.

If Cheat chooses to go that route, I imagine the number of people with those permissions will be extremely limited, with a close watch by the staff.

let's be real here

the consequence of posting porn is minimal--you might offend somebody with a very weak constitution.
boo hoo, you saw some tits--oh well

the consequence of posting spoilers is universal--everyone who reads the spoiler is negatively affected
everyone

That'll come down to the staff handling the situation.

Even if we were to throw a harassment charge in, you're still looking at no more than a few days, at most.

Thank you.

This is what I am saying. It's not like insults and shit are even remotely as bad as spoiling. You can apologise for an insult or harassment, and the negative effects are mostly mitigated. Likewise with porn.

There's no coming back from something being spoiled.

Highly unlikely, a nice idea on paper but in application its far too susceptible to abuse, a person can edit out what they don't like or just flat out lock threads when things don't go their way. Even if the staff gives it to more "responsible" members, there have always been cases of members who have generally been more calm to lose their cool. Its just not going to be a thing, sorry.

Are we that strapped for members that we can't dish out justice when needed?

Why is the punishment so lenient?

Increase all the bans if they're so soft. Jesus, it's not easy to break the fucking rules. And if you do, you should be punished accordingly.

Posting malicious attacks or repeatedly harassing members will carry penalties ranging from a 10-20% warning for the first offense, to lite-bans of various lengths.

Let's say we gave Gatsby a warning for harassment - it was only his first or second offense if i recall, so his impact from harassment would be small, maybe a day lite-ban.

Spoiling, depending on what we decide, will be a few days at most.

As I said, there is no way we are going to ban people for weeks to a month for posting a spoiler.
