Yeah, this needs to be looked at. For now, just don't put any humongous images in as your avatar or they'll be removed.

large images (in terms of file size) take a lot of bandwidth

mainly, it slows down the page

200x200 at 40 kilobytes should be plenty

Cheat, isn't your bandwidth only used for images hosted on this site? It's an imgur link, so I was under the impression every time it's seen here it's using Imgur's bandwidth.

Unless people here deliberately disable browser caching, it isn't loading every time, just once until the cache is cleared. But I didn't realize it was so massive and I completely understand why it's got to go. My bad.

.gifs really are a terribly inefficient file type and really anything over 50kb should be strongly discouraged.

I didn't even realize Turkey's avatar was a .gif until septy pointed it out because it loaded so slowly.

The new file is about 1.4Mb, 120x 120. If you implement a smaller file size, I'll change it, but I've used larger gifs without complaint.
