How exactly can you derail a thread that has no discussion value to begin with?

I was wondering because of that fake Pokemon topic in gaming. MR P and LC were telling people to stop derailing it but how exactly was it being derailed? The whole thread was nothing more then a bait thread with a single image for the OP. There was no discussion value at all to it. The only things that were being said was either telling the OP to fuck off or you got me things. So how exactly can you derail a thread like that?

It was verging on the type of shitpost that's usually locked on the Flood, but the derail by Kupo and Verbatim was very clear if you saw the posts Psy deleted.

That's not discussion the thread. Discussion the thread would be talking about what it's in the OP, not creating your own discussion just to post in it. There isn't much discussion value in something when it consists of "fuck you" or you got me posts. Hell there wasn't any thing to discuss anyway since the OP is just a bait thread. Like I said it's hard to derail something when there anything to derail to begin with.

A thread can't be derailed when there was no discussion from the start. I don't know about you but the thread I saw had nothing at all to talk about besides telling the OP "Oh shit man you gotz mah g00d."

I don't think that's the point. The point is heading off stupid petty bullshit that carries over from multiple threads.
When a thread devolves into shit flinging you don't just sit there and watch it as mods. You break it up.

Whatever the thread was about it wasn't about that argument.

What happened in that thread was about 2 pages of flaming over something stupid, a joke thread with little to discuss can still be sent into the gutter by a flamewar over something unrelated. That would be why it was derailing.
