Anyways, this is a double-edged sword.  There's potential for it to be successfully used, and successfully abused.  If someone's thread starts getting derailed, or people get angry and start assaulting each other in the thread and there's no monitors online, the person can then lock their own thread.

Then there's the spam of lock threads in the Flood, like "LOL I LOCKED THIS THREAD;  LOL I LOCKED ANOTHER THREAD".

I don't particularly have a stance on this issue, but whatever happens happens.  Wouldn't mind either way.

People could spam locked threads.

Ban. Them.

It shouldn't be a monitor's or moderator's job to lock threads on request. It should be their job to lock threads when things get out of hand. That's it.

The OP of the thread ought to have some discretion to that end.

Banning people for using a tool I gave them? No. You don't suddenly own a thread when you make it; it's not yours, it belongs to the community once it's out. That's the point of a forum. Giving everyone locking power over their own threads would cause aggravation if the OP gets upset and locks the thread.

And I'm not talking about people spamming locked threads here. I'm saying that in one of the very popular hot topics, the OP could essentially shut down discussion at any point in time, regardless of if they're contributing or not.

EDIT: and I'm not sure I phrased that properly so I'll rephrase it. I'm saying that by giving everyone locking abilities, it's implied that the OP can lock threads at their discretion as long as they're not obnoxious about it (as with spamming the report button to flood the system). And so I couldn't ban them for being a shit and locking a popular thread, because I would have given them the ability and license to do so.
