does this stuff even work?
 I typed in "Moon sword" for a custom title and it's not popping up... or is custom title something completely different  than what titles used to be?

Hmm...
Those are still kind of in the process of being fixed. They're still getting saved, but they are not reflected in the forum as of yet. That may change in the future. If not, the field will be removed.
