On b.net there are groups with member chats.

Have users here asked for a similar thing?

They're planned.

I'm all for them, but most(?) of the community here seems to be generally against the idea, since we're already kind of a small group in and of ourselves, and if we had groups, there's some concern that it would kill activity in the mains.

I think that's BS, but whatever. I'll flow with the tide on this one.

Hmm...
Been working on them, but it's a slow process as Isara isn't around to help and I keep running into issues with the original script (right now users can't edit their own posts in groups).

How would group moderation work?

A user will be admin of the group, but only in that specific group.
Site mods and admins will still have powers over them.

Pretty much this. When they're done, the group owner will be able to create admins and mods, who can ban, lock posts, and hide posts. There will also be 7 security roles you can use as a ranking system with corresponding nameplates and colors. It'll be tight.

We don't have the population for groups to work right without them killing the forums. Bnet has the population for groups to be active along with the forums as well. The only thing they would do is split up the population on a site that has hardly anybody to begin with. The other thing is that groups are going to be pointless until we get a population due to there being a decent amount of groups with hardly anybody posting in them. One group may have most of the population posting in it and for the others they are just there taking up space.

I feel like I've regurgitated the answer to this concern like 10 times. I'm not about to risk the forum for groups.

Multiply that by about 7 or 8. Not everyone is online all the time.

And when these people are online the site still feels dead and empty. There's been a few times where we had at least two dozen people online and hardly anybody was posting.

Hardly.
Even at 4 am there's still at least 15 people online.
That's the minimum.

Well, it depends on timezones.
The quietest I've seen was with 4 people.

Wow really?
But that must have been late night for NA right? Like 2 - 4 am?

IIRC, it would've been between 8am and 10am at GMT 00.

so what is your big solution to prevent groups killing the mains?

I...don't...let them kill the mains?

Groups will be beta tested with established groups on Bnet that I can rope into testing. Those will be the only groups on here for a good while and they will be invite only while the bugs are squashed and I get feedback from group owners on what they need and what needs changed. Assuming these groups will share population spikes similar to Anarchy, I'm banking on getting some members from those groups to stick around in the mains.

From there, groups will be opened to high-ranking members on an application/approval basis so I can control the population flow and cut them off if it dips in the mains. Later on, like...months on, they will be opened up to the public like you guys have been assuming I'd do from the start.

Simplified version: I will pay attention and not let them kill the mains.

You should have me as a site tester or something. I dunno. I get bored a lot here.

People seem to forget that groups will doubtlessly attract new members. It's not like the member count is in stasis.
